Hey y’all, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate reading everyone’s fishing reports and gear/tackle/boat experiences and opinions!
I’m seriously considering buying my first boat soon. I have been fishing with my dad in his 2000 SeaArk 1652 for the last 8 years, and it is awesome for what we paid for it and its intended use conditions, but here lately I’ve been thinking I want to get a fiberglass boat for us to use when it’s gonna be windy or we want to take someone with us OR if I get a wild hair and want to bass fish. I’d like to get an 18-19 foot boat as I have a Tacoma (V6, 4x4) and don’t plan to get another full size truck. All that being said....what do y’all think? What do you recommend? I’ve always loved the 90s and 00s Rangers, but I don’t know if boats of that age are too risky. I want to be able to safely go fishing by myself if I want to without breakin the dang bank!

Most boats that old have gas hog engines unless you can find one with an upgrade. They use a lot more fuel than the modern 4 strokes and it is getting harder to find a shop to work on them. The main thing to look for in a older fiberglass boat is floor and transom rot. There are good guys out there you just have to be careful and have it checked out by someone that knows boats.

Ranger, Stratos, Skeeter, Triton, Champion and other older boats could fit the bill. 17'6" to 19' would be a good size. The old motors do use more gas, but how many times do you get to go and how far do you run. The way I fish it probably does not matter I usually do not run that far unless tournament fishing. Keep an eye on the transom, stringers, floor and motor, but don't forget a good trolling motor (features cost on a trolling motor) and the electronics can be quiet expensive. The aluminum bass boats might be a good choice also, smaller motors an better mileage but still run good and ride pretty good. Good luck with the hunt.
