Default Summertime Bite & Bank Fishing

Other than fishing the deep water around the bridges at Guntersville, I’m not sure that I’ve been able to get an idea of other types of places one should be looking to catch Crappie from the shore during the summer. Will they stay shallow or near the bank in certain areas during the summer months, or do they pretty much always head for deep cool water?

once the water temp hits 80 degrees and above they go to their deep water suspension modes .They will come shallow but usually in the dark to eat the small fry and only for a small period of time.... its tough at least for me until the wateer hits 75 again

You can still find them shallow if they have no choice (rivers and sloughs), but I'm not sure of any bank accessible areas. Surprising in the upper Flint and Paint Rock Rivers you'll find more Crappie in 18" to 36" of water hugging the bank under trees that throw a dark shade on the water. They'll pick these areas over deeper water (6' to 8') when it's very clear. Just my 2 cents. As the water gets into the upper 70's and above they typically won't chase a bait, so you rally have to slow down.

I catch them in the summer from the causeways and 1 particular dock in 6-8 ft of water in mid day heat....if there are bait balls that is....if you see bass chasing bait on Gville, such as happens a good bit particularly around bridges and culverts, many times crappie are behind or under them....I have filled buckets in july with that tactic...

Since it’s kinda slow on here I thought I’d at least post a little teeny update to this thread. Fished a spot on Flint Creek close to the house this morning real early for about an hour, and caught one black crappie about 8” long up against the root ball of a lay down in 4 foot of water I’d guess. I caught it right as I had to head home, so not sure how many more might’ve been hanging around there. It’s enough motivation for me to keep trying a few places similar to this one where I might can pick a few off while it’s hot. I’m enjoying myself even if not catching much!

If you have a light, that can help with night fishing around the bridges. I've used them from the bank before with good success.

You have more drive than I do. Lol. I give it up this time of year except for some cat fishing.
