Default Kayak Trip Report, Moulton New City Lake

I took Thursday off work and made a trip to Moulton looking for gills on the bed. Bad call with all the rain and cooler weather. I didn't find a single bed (shellcracker or gill). Ended up plowing water and searching. Tons of little gills, shellcrackers and bass, but slow go on filling a cooler. I left a little before dark with 24 (almost a half limit) with gills that averaged 9 inches and shells that were 10. Largest gill was 10 1/2" and largest shell was a bit over 12". Nothing worth keeping caught in less than 6 feet of water and not a single Crappie in the boat. The water was clear, visibility of about four feet and 65 degrees at 9AM. It had warmed to 67 by the time I left. All the females had eggs and none of the males looked like they had fanned beds or had darkened colors. When the water gets warm enough they're going to storm the banks in mass.

One note, I have a new favorite 1/32oz jig head. I tried the VMC Neon Moon Eye. It has a reversed wire to hold the jig body. It was too expensive, but held the 1" slider body cast after cast and fish after fish. I only had to replace a slider if a fish bite the tail off. It might be cheaper once you figure in the sliders that are saved. I dropped an order for a couple of bulk packs when I got home.

Still a blessed and beautiful day to be on the water!

I wasn’t having any luck yesterday at Guntersville with many different colors, and I thought I need to try the white maribou jigs I bought solely because Ditch Basser catches fish all the time with those. Sure enough, I started catching fish. Now, I guess I need to buy your new favorite. LOL

Thanks for sharing. I like the reversed wires on the Z-Man jig heads for bass fishing. I guess I need to give them a try when I need some more crappie jigs.
