Default Kayak Trip Report, Madison County Lake

With all the Lake Wheeler creeks high and muddy I decided to give Madison County Lake I try today. Fishing was slow, but I managed a few. I kept 8 Crappie and 9 gills, enough for lunch tomorrow. Best bait for the Crappie was a 1/16oz Marabou jig in White with a Chartreuse body and Red head single pole jigging about 10 to 13 feet deep. I found several areas with Crappie stacked up, I just couldn't get them to bite. The 8 I kept were all stuffed with shad. The lake is full again, visibility of about 18 inches and 50 degrees at 7:30AM. The surface had warmed to 55 by 3:00PM.

    slabby,

It's $3 to fish the lake and $3 more to launch a boat. I've never fished for the trout, but I believe it's $5. There were 40 or 50 people fishing the stock and take trout pond last week. I'd give Chris (lake manger) a call 256-776-4905. He's always informative on what the fish are biting both in the lake and trout pond.

Trout fishing is $5 per person per day. You get to keep 3 trout. I love fishing Madison County lake when I get a chance to go down to Alabama. They have been pulling some nice 2-3 lb trout out of the pond. They stock it right before Thanksgiving and open it up Black Friday and then they stock again in Late Jan and open it for fishing again in Feb until the fish are gone in early spring.
