Default What would you do different?

I found some fish today in a spot that I found fish last winter that would only bite in nasty cold, windy weather. I tried them today, even though it wasn't cold. It was dang sure windy....

On the 4th or 5th cast, I caught one. The next cast, I got a bite and broke off on the hook set. I was trying to hurry and re-tie and grabbed the same size, but different color jig head thinking it wouldn't matter. Apparently it did. I made about 10 casts with the other colored head and didn't get a bite. I swapped back to an unpainted head and caught one more fish about 30 minutes later. That was it. The fish were there, I just couldn't get them to bite.

I was having to fish downwind. There was a huge bow in my line and I watched it as best I could to see if I could see a bite, but I didn't.

With the info I gave, what would you guys done different? I wish I had some minnows with me.

The water was so rough that I didn't even get in my seat on the front deck. I sat on the deck and fished. LOL

I would have went to the house and practiced being a mechanic and put a rear end in my recliner! Seriously some days they just want cooperate down sizing will help but with all the wind that wouldn’t have worked ! If I was determined to stay I would have kelp switching up and would have tried some slab sauce and everything thing else in my box and stuck it in front of their nose and held it as still as possible and if that fails find another school or practice being a mechanic!

I threw several different colors at them. I couldn't go lighter than a 16th ounce jig. If I can get on them like I did last year, I'm gonna catch a double limit. I could have last year but couldn't keep the boat on them. I figured out how to do that since last year. Today I had the boat where it needed to be without running over the top of them. They just didn't cooperate. When I found them last year, it was 37 degrees cloudy and drizzling rain on and off with a 20 mph west wind. Just like today, except much colder.

I would have tied on the same color and weight of jig that they was biting on and gave that a few more tries,if I didn't have another one like it I would have tried to get as close in color to the one that was getting bites,my two cents worth which ain't much

If the bite was shallow enough I put a cork on and cast up wind. Then let the wind drive the cork into position. When in position lower rod tip tighten line to minimize wind bow to stay in strike zone longer. But I prolly would have been in the recliner to Begin with.

Sometimes you got to move on and try a different place. I find them pretty regularly and they just want bite. Last time slabprower and I fished we found hundreds on brush and they just wouldn't bite luckily the fish on docks would. Go back later and they may be in a better mood. How deep was they?

I would probably have tied on double 1/16oz jigs about 12-18" apart ... that would have helped with the line bow.

As to the initial biters & then the lack of bites .... sometimes you get the aggressive biters out of the school, and the rest of them are just "looking" at your bait (out of curiosity ??) but don't hit it. Fished with a buddy that has a Livescope and saw that very same scenario play out time & time again. There'd be a dozen or more fish in the tree/brushpile, but we'd only get fish on the first few casts & then watch the remaining fish either come to the bait and follow it for a few seconds before returning back to the cover or simply ignoring the jigs altogether. We were using several different sizes & colors of plastics, but no one color seemed to outperform any other one.

Sometimes a caught fish, thrashing around while being reeled in, will stimulate the others to get aggressive towards any bait thrown in their vicinity .... but, other times the whole bunch of them (or most of them) will shut down & get deeper into the cover or just move to the opposite side of it (away from the boat). The Livescope has shown that behavior to my buddy more than a few times !! It's also shown him that a slow falling/gliding bait will get hit, but jiggle the rod to add a little "action" to the bait & the fish might sometimes just scatter.
Thanks DV8ed thanked you for this post
