    Default Battery question...

Anyone feel free to move this if needed and as I'm writing this I'm thinking I should look at the main index to see if there's an answer to this but I've never been smart like that...
I've got a one trolling motor battery getting hot when I charge everything. Right now it's only reading 6v but I was gonna buzz this by y'all and see if you thought the same thing I do...which is that it's going bad. It's got good water in it and I can't find a place at all where I think something is crossed. Got an onboard charger that's a couple years old. It's a promariner triple charger.

    Thanx all!

How many amps is the charger pushing?

    How hot is hot?

    Are the batteries the same?

I would first remove all wires from the batteries and inspect the terminals on the wires. I have seen them corrode inside the insulation.

Also check the output of the charger and see how many volts each battery is getting.

It's likely a battery with a short in it and hot batteries can explode, so don't push it.

I had one do that and was told it was a bad cell in the battery. Not sure if that is what it was I just replaced it. Didn’t want to take a chance on it exploding in the boat next to gas tank.

Sounds like a couple of shorted cells.

Don’t fool with it. If it’s getting hot it is shorted. Pull it and replace it.

No sense in melting down a battery and potentially causing a fire

Had one of my 3 doing that a couple weeks ago getting hot enough to smell the acid! They were almost 3 years old so I did the no no that everyone says don’t do ! I replaced the bad ONE and we will see how the other hold up!

Mine are 2013 model batteries. I hope to make it until spring before replacing them. The new more efficient trolling motor should help with that
