    Default Keeping Fish in Kayak

I know there are a few on the Alabama forum that fish out of a kayak. I was wondering what you guys use to keep your catch in? Looking for ideas

After talking to Ditch Basser I’ve kept what few I catch in a cooler with a few ice packs. Scared to use a stringer because of gators but would like to find a way besides a cooler. I’ll be watching this and hopefully someone will give us some ideas.

Stringer works good if there is no gator population. If there is a possibility of being towed by a gator. Then I use a cooler

I just use a small cooler with all the ice from our ice-maker dumped in. If I go two days in a row I have to resort to my frozen water bottles to let the ice-maker catch up. I can fit a full limit in a cooler much smaller than you'd think, as long the fish aren't too big. I'm about to upgrade coolers and I'll probably start taking a slightly larger cooler when I do.

I have an Igloo. I think it’s a 20 quart. Bungee it behind me. Twist to my left to put fish in . I’m not flexible enough to dig around in it but can turn plenty to open it and put fish in. I always use frozen bottles. In cool weather two or three small bottles 12 oz will work. In heat I’ll use 6 bottles. Never stayed long enough to lose temperatures. Just make sure to put them in the cooler before you leave the house. Just hose the cooler and bottles out and put them in a plastic shopping bag and back in the freezer.
When I started this yak fishing ditchbasser gave me most of these ideas. I was kinda set on using a stringer but this cooler setup is really easy. It’s also convenient if you are like me and wait a day or two to clean your fish. Just add ice and you don’t have as many chores after your trip.

I use the smallest yeti cooler and it fits perfect in the back of my Jackson Coosa. When i fish for stripe i use a large cooler soft sided bag it has a insulated bag and more durable shell on the outside. The bag is made for kayaks and i ordered mine from amazon.

Most sit on top kayaks can hold a cooler behind the seat. My favorite kayak to fish out of is an Old Town Loon 135. It's a sit in side. Before I bought it I made a template of my small cooler on a piece of cardboard to make sure I had room to cut though the deck.
