Been talking to my cousin about trout fishing there. My brother in law went and caught some this spring. He was just casting out and fishing on the bottom. Well me and him aren’t speaking right now lol. I was wondering if any of y’all have any info. We don’t know anything about a fly rod but would like to catch a few. I don’t know what he was using for bait fishing like that.

I could be wrong but I think there is a bait store below smith lake dam that sells fly rod tackle and would be able to answer your questions

Like Crappieorbust said the fly shop is a good place to start. Some clear floats and light line and very small hooks is what we used on a spinning reel , it has been years but I think we baited with canned whole kernel corn. I believe Alabama Power posts when they release trout. Good luck.

Never fished there myself but did a lot of trout fishing in Kentucky. Try some garlic cheese and salmon eggs. Used to use the cheese on a small treble hook size 14-24. Make sure you have the hook completely covered in the smallest amount u can. Go with 4 lb test line at the heaviest, 2 would be best. If there is current try and get your bait to the bottom with a split shot around 8-10 inches above the bait and let the split shot just tick off the bottom as it travels down stream. Be ready to set the hook as soon as u think you have a strike or the trout will have already sucked the bait in, cleaned your hook and spit it out. If u try the garlic cheese try and keep it cold, will help from throwing it off when you cast, also dip it in the water for a couple of seconds to help it set up. You can also try the small marshmallows and the small jars of trout bait made by Berkeley.

Thanks guys. I’ve been trout fishing one time in Arkansas years ago. My cousin is wanting to go so we may give it a try.

I haven’t been this year yet but when I go I use ultra lights with 4-6lb and the trout power bait with a split shot and cast and let it tic bottom until it settles. It all depends on the current. You can check current flow at the Riverside fly shop website.

A couple years back me and a buddy would go almost every Saturday morning during the really hot months of the year. We just used ultralight gear. I had a little Pfleuger underspin spooled with 4 lb crappie line and then put on about a 3 foot leader of 2 lb Berkley Vanish. We used the little Berkley Powerbout trout worms mostly but did ok on live wigglers too. Never had much luck with Powerbait balls or corn. I think most any tackle will work as long as you have a leader of the Vanish and use real trout hooks.

It's just kinda weird how they turn on and off. We would usually go real early and fish for an hour before we caught any and then we would both limit out in about 20 minutes. Then continue to fish for fun (remember no culling) and then they would turn off again.

Glad you brought it up though as Ive been meaning to go back soon. Also still have yet to make the run from the boat launch where the rivers meet up to the pumphouse which I have been wanting to do.

The secret to using power bait is to not use too much. Not much bigger than a pea sized piece of bait on a salmon egg hook on 2-4lb test line. I use an egg sinker on the main line with a barrel swivel then an 18" leader to the hook. Let it tic the bottom or just sit. Have caught many limits of trout over the years using that set up. The power bait floats so the leader allows the bait to hang just above the bottom. The rainbow (Chartreuse and orange colors mixed) has been my best color with the yellow with glitter second choice.
