Kayak Trip Report, Moulton New City Lake

I took Friday off work and fished Moulton. Cold morning, but warmed up nice by 8AM. The water surface was down to 77 degrees with visibility of about three feet. I hoped to find a few gills, but all the beds I found were empty. Not sure if the cooler temps had pushed them off, fish had already spawn out or someone cleaned them out last week. I did managed 15 keepers that were between 9 and 10 inches and many, many smaller toss backs. I also didn't catch a single Crappie. Slow day for this little lake, but still a fun trip without the heat. I fished a 1" Yo-Zuri Snap Bean. They only run about 18 inches deep, but the gills love them!

I think I'm going to chase Crappie on my next trip. Gills are working for me this year, LOL!

I went to Moulton City Lake Saturday morning and started trying for crappie up around the dam intake with no luck. Switched over to bream for a while with now luck finally started fishing for green carp and started catching a few. I had a lot of fun fishing for the smaller bass around the edges with a white marabou jig and a spinner. Made a good day of it. The deep clear water has always been my downfall.

I like the lake since there's zero pressure, but the gills spawn in 5 to 6 feet of water and most of what I catch is from water 10 to 15 feet deep. Fishing a 1/32oz jig on 4 pound test in 15 feet of water is out of my comfort zone and pushes my skills. I seldom find fish stacked up, but the gills are huge when you find them. I put back a Shellcracker last year that was 14 inches and weighed around 2 pounds with my largest gills just under 12 inches. I didn't know redears got that big!

If you go deep on City Lake it causes you to learn to use your depth finder or you are just fishing blind. I plan to go back some more and just work on learning to use my depth finder better. I caught 1 huge Redear over there last year out of about 15 feet...marked him on my depth finder and then caught him.

They get a lot bigger. Our SC state record is was caught in the diversion canal between the two Santee Cooper lakes. Biggest one I've caught was shade over 2# , but they get a lot bigger. This was from our State DNR records page.
