Come on over I'll take you on a trip to Smith for some Big striper fishing and you will be hooked. Early spring is the time to catch the big ones. Caught a 38lber last year, I think we talked about a trip. Didn't get to go much this year. Smith is about an hour 15 minutes from Huntsville to the closest launch on cullman side. Crappie fishing is good on wheeler and smith, but smith fishes a lot different that the river does. Guntersville is great also but I'm not very familiar with it.
Once you get you Alabama drivers license you should be good to go. Lots of great fish and hunting just depends on how far you've willing to drive.

I've been hooked on Stripers for a very long time. Will definitely be after them as soon as we get settled, and will look you up! Thanks...
There is so much up in the air right now I'm just trying to make sense of it all! Hoping it smooths out soon, so I can consider fishing again!
You're too old for the vessel operator license, you're grandfathered. Also, hunting and fishing license is free to residents over 65. No per person pole limit. Can't help you with the SS card. You may have to visit the decatur SS office or go online and order one. Property taxes in Madison County run about 60 mils. In Limestone they're 32; unless you want to live close to HSV, move to Morgan or Limestone. We're a bit more country and laid back.
Definitely looking to get out in the country some, if living on the water is not an option...
Wheeler is a good lake to fish, something you may know or not, wheeler is one of the lakes they drop the water about 5ft. From late fall to spring the water will be down. There are lots of places you can fish in the summer that has little or no water in the winter. Lots of water lots you can't put a boat in during winter months. Most of this is west of 65 bridge at Decatur. Still a great place to live. fyi
Even though you are grandfathered in on operators license you still have to show the vessel designation on your driver's license so when you get those make sure it is put on,all it is they put a "v" a long with the drivers designation and you will be good with operators license

OK, thanks... All of you have been great with all of this info! Thanks so much!
I've spent a little bit of time on those north AL lakes and the Tennessee River. I have two words for it.....Gods Country! Extremely nice people, lots of great year round fishing for several species, and affordable real estate. It is definitely on my short list for retirement locations or a second home at the very least. You will love it. Guntersville is at the top of my list at this time.
