    Default Line size and color???

Just wondering what everyone's preference on line size is and why? I currently use 4 lb line, but have contemplated going to 6 lb to give it a try. I was thinking it would give me a better chance of straightening my hook out before the line broke when I get hung up in docks, trees, rocks, etc... I suppose I could also go the route of light wire hooks in combination with the 4 lb line. Your thoughts...

Also, what's your take on Hi Vis line? Some claim it doesn't bother the fish and others say it does.

I use 6 lb. hi-viz most of the time. On the Coosa river it does not bother the fish at all.

I usually use 4 lb line but have recently spooled a UL setup with 2 lb and I'm loving it. Always hi-viz. Mr. Crappie said on the crappie connection podcast he usually uses 6 lb line. I guess it depends on how your fishing as to what line to use as well.

Im a 4lb Hi-Vis guy myself. Im not brave enough to try 2lb yet. I have not noticed an effect on line colors either. I rarely break off on 4 lb line even with large fish (12+ lb). The reason I quit using 6 lb is the improved castability of 4.

I’m by no means a pro. But I was using 6lb high vis in a gravel pit I fish. I would go and nothing till right at dark. I asked about it on here and ditch basser told me to try clear line. Made a big difference. Maybe it was just coincidence but it did change.

That's good to know about the podcast, I've been looking for one that focuses on crappie fishing.

I use Mr Crappie 6 & 8#. Vicious 6# is really small dia. I like it. Power Pro 10/2 for vertical jigging. love it!
Richard Gene did a video about 2 wks ago on that very subject. He found the clearest water he could find and used hi vis yellow. He said he ain't buying the line shy stuff. But, he said, "that's just my opinion."
I am new to jigging only and am teaching myself. But, I'm learning from him and I'm going to do what he does best I can, because he keeps it simple and fun and productive. He's put the time in on the water to know.

What ever you use I would recommend a high quality line such as stren, trilene , vicious ect. Crappie max Mr. Crappie and other cheap lines are junk. I try to use hi viz stren in 6 lb test when I can find it. If you are worried about line shy fish use fluorocarbon

I don’t even have an opinion. Like I said my experience was probably coincidence. But I do like being able to see the hi vis.

If you are fishing in a strong wind and in the dark with a bow in your line like it seems to be lately for me you need hi-vis yellow to show up in your light so you can see the tick or the slack when a crappie tics it. I use 4lb test because I know based on my count about how deep the jig is based on how fast a 16th oz jig sinks with 4lb. I have used 6 but the jig does not sink as fast due to the diameter and it is more affected by current than the 4. As to breakage if it gets into a rock crack its going to break no matter the test unless you using 80lb braid which will slice your hand first if not using gloves. If it hangs on wood , my 4 will straighten the hook .As long as your drag is set right with the 4 and there are no nicks on your line and the fish doesn't go by or around a piling then you should not lose to many big fish
