I am from the south. Mobile Delta area. Need some information on Delta Crappie and bridges during the winter. I go up to Guntersville during the winter and spring and most of the time you see folks fishing crappie around bridges. Down here in my neck of the woods, you don't see folks fishing crappie around bridges.. Are they different FISH??? I know they are the same but does anyone fish crappie in deep water around bridge piles in the cold weather?

I have never fished there but fish relate to cover and water depth according to temperature, available forage, and current. The bridges most people fish on Guntersville are on major creeks and act as funnels as fish move up and down these creeks. The bridge pilings offer cover to bait fish and there are channel ledges on both sides of the bridges that allow fish to move up and feed. I'm sure when the conditions are right the same thing will occur in your area.

I like trolling open water myself but it’s been slow for me lately because I haven’t been going ??

thanks for your response. I had considered the same things regarding funneling, ledges and bait around the bridge columns. Maybe river fish just don't hold up around bridges. thanks again.

If I lived in Mobile I would probably not think much about crappie. I would be after those trout, Redfish and other salt water species that I love so much!
