    Default Tuffy/Shiners or Shad?

I've been watching a lot of Richard Gene "the fishing machine" videos on youtube and i noticed that he catches and uses shad and not store bought minnows when he fishes with live bait.

Does anybody know the reason for this? Is it just cheaper or do crappie prefer the Shad over store bought Tuffy or Shiners?

My guess is it's cheaper as much as he fishes.

Probably cheaper but Shad are hard to keep alive over a long time. I generally buy toughies by the 1/2 lb or 1lb depending on how much fishing I plan to do over a week or so and keep them alive by keeping air going on them and putting ammonia remover in the water every few days along with some fresh water.

Probably the lack of places to buy minnows would be my guess

I think the fishing machine just likes to catch fish. No matter what type.....it’s goooooodddd fer ya!! I also believe that a wild shad might get you a couple more bites since that’s what they are eating naturally on a daily basis. But Then again I don’t like eating the same thing every day but I’m not a fish.

I would think you could catch the same fish with a jig or minnow or spoon. Crappie aren't picky most of the time. Maybe 3 or 4 times a year do I have to find out what they want. I fish a couple of different jigs most of the time and catch them as good as most people.

He fishes with store bought minnows too, unless I'm having a lapse in memory. Seems I remember him using them in the past. I think the reason his latest videos are done with fresh caught live bait are because this time of year the baitfish are in huge schools are very easy to catch. I have thought about getting a cast net for that same reason. And also the same reason Glenn mentioned. There's just not a whole lot of places to buy GOOD minnows around here. There are only 3 stores that I will buy minnows from in the Guntersville area. Three stores sounds sufficient except it's 20-30 minutes out of the way depending on where I'm fishing. I don't know where RG lives but I know he lives in Dekalb county so his choices are more limited by distance than mine are.

Any of you who fish the Town Creek area, you won't beat the quality of the minnows at Ms Perrys store just north of Town Creek. She only keeps them in the cool months though.

You also have to think he's doing something different to draw people to watch his videos. If he did the same thing every week people would quit watching

I know a few folks who prefer to use shad because that's what the crappie are eating naturally and they usually catch larger crappie than most folks ….it is hard to keep then alive though.
