    Default Pond management

I know that u have to remove some fish from time to time to keep them growing and not over populate. So here’s my question to you guys if I’m catching 20 or so 9-10 inch crappie and 15 or so 6 inch crappie from the pond how many would u remove? This pond has big bass, big cats, and crappie and apparently some shell cracker in it.

I would Remove every crappie you catch !!!! size does not matter pretty soon you will be catching 30 or 40 6 inch crappie and few over 9, unless your pond is greater than 20 or 25 acres. 1 mature female crappie will lay over 50000 eggs. if 1% survive to maturity that's 500 new fish from ONE laying. If half of them are females then when they spawn that's 250 X 50000=12500000 and 1% of that is 125000. you see why Biologist and county agents DO not recommend Crappie in ponds. Maybe the pond is heavily fished so the population of fish is being slowed down some and will continue to produce good amount of keepers

Snapper king it isn’t a huge pong maybe 2 acres and not heavily fished. We never knew crappie was in there until last year and every one caught was about 6 inches. This year there are a decent number of 9 inch fish. But yeah I figured one or two spawns and it would be over run and they wouldn’t grow. Gonna try to take atleast 40 out today

Me and my buddy fished out a pond for a guy a few years ago that was over ran by crappie which he didn't care for..He mainly wanted to raise trophy size bass.. Every spawning season the crappie would eat most of the bass fry..

Mikejigs there’s some monster bass in this pond. Just hard to catch them. I’ve caught several 5-6 pounders. I know there’s bigger in there because I’ve seen them on beds. Just never knew crappie was there til last year.

there is another way although sort of expensive .I had a buddy that would go buy about 5 or 6 lbs of minnows and turn them loose in his 3 acre pond once a month sort of like feeding catfish. It seemed to work some as he was always catching good ones and not as many smaller ones. Then he up and moved so I figure it went bad once the minnows were cut off!! Another sign of over population is big saucer eyes on small fish .When they stunt the eyes will almost be larger than a nickel

If you want to catch the big bass catch a very small bream or use one of the smaller crappie and hook him in the tail and set it under a good sized float about 1 to 3 ft deep use NO lead just let it free swim out in the middle and hang on sooner or later as they cant handle the struggling fish. Salamanders work well too but hard to come by.

Oh yeah the bass chase the crappie if u ski them in lol. And yep the eyes on the 9 inch fish are larger than they should be. We kept probably 30 out of there today.
