Almost forgot, we are boatless so will be bank fishing.

IMO, from the bank, fishing a bridge or the riprap along a causeway would be your best bet for catching crappie.

I don't know which campground would be better.

There's two bridges just down the road from Honeycomb and they have a pretty extensive dock.

I've never fished the 431 bridge at Honeycomb so I can't advise on it's popularity. I have driven under it in a boat a couple of times and it's pretty low, so fishing under it might be cramped. The most popular crappie fishing bridges on Guntersville south are Town Creek and Browns Creek bridges.

Both campgrounds are nice. State Park got devastated by tornadoes in 2011 and lost almost all their big trees.
You have a chance to get a lot on the water at Honeycomb, State Park doesn't have any right on the water.
Both have docks that you can fish from, probably have better luck catching bream than crappie though.
Both are pet friendly (leashed dogs anyway)
You can rent paddle boats and canoes at honeycomb, not sure about state park but bet you can.
Town Creek (State Park) has better crappie fishing from the bridges.

Goose pond in Scottsboro has a camp ground, a dock, and a couple good bridges within 5mi. That would be my choice.

Since you are in the Huntsville area you should also check out Madison County Lake. They do not allow camping but they have a bunch of great bank fishing spots with submerged brush piles close to the bank and they are marked so you can see them. The cost is $3 per person per day to fish and they also rent jon boats for $5 a day!! I have fished there several times with my dad and had a great time. Plus there is no size limit. You just have to let them weigh the fish you caught so they know how many are taken out so they can re-stock the lake. It's out off 72 from Huntsville. Madison County PFL | Outdoor Alabama

If you want crappie within walking distance, I'd probably stay at Town Creek. You can fish the bridge there. You can also drive to Short Creek or it's not terribly far to South Sauty. All should have some crappie.
