    Default Spider Rigging Newbie

I shoot docks and have an addiction with it, but do long line in the spring also. I am wanting to add spider rigging to my arsenal and am looking for suggestions and tips. I have been looking at buying some 12 foot rods to use. I will most likely use 1/2 - 3/4 oz weights and minnows. What rods would you suggest....not the cheapest, but not expensive? What lb line would you suggest and would you go with braid? I will more than likely put weight on the bottom and come up 12-14 inches and make a loop knot and come up another 12-14 inches with another loop knot. I will use the pre rigged hooks and join hands with the two. I welcome all responses and the pros and cons of each. It would also be very beneficial for me to tag along with someone who is seasoned in this method, if you would be willing to let me.

I am not the best at spider rigging but do pretty well with it most of the time. I would suggest BNM BGJP rods or Southern Crappie rods. I started years ago with 10 ft. then went to 12 ft. then to 14 ft. but the 12 ft. rods are a little easier to handle. I mostly use 1/2 oz. weights myself and they work good most of the time. I use a 10 lb. main line and make my double hook pre tied rigs from 6 lb. line. I attach the pre tied rigs to the main line with a locking snap swivel so they can be changed out quickly if needed. One thing to be aware of is you will hang up a lot and loose a lot of tackle so just be prepared. Some folks use heavier line to help with lost tackle. I tried braid for a short time but took it off because it kept wrapping around the tips of my rods and caused lots of problems and also found that when I got hung and tried to pull loose that it was breaking the wraps around my guides loose. If you need any more info feel free to send me a PM and I will try to help if I can.

On rods get the southerns , I had bgjp (good rod ) 3/4 weight puts quite a bit of bow in the rod , I also have walley Marshall new rod for pushing heavier weight ( heavier weight for faster speed) also have some crappie max signature series , so I have had plenty to use and if I was buying new ones today to push at .6 and slower and just beginning I would do the southern from Ed in a 14 ft I would go. No shorter if so you will be wanting to go up soon I would learn to use the long length it want take long. Once you go to pushing faster than .6 you will need more weight then you will need another rod in my opinion. The southern is a little stiffer than the bgjp and a little softer than the crappie max signature series. This in my opinion making the perfect choice unles you where really experienced then you would know what you wanted . Good luck
