    Default 1/24 oz jigheads

Got a question about the 1/24 oz jigheads. What size hook and type of hook do you guys recommend for trolling? Do you prefer unpainted or painted heads? Does head color really matter? I'm from Kentucky and these are hard to find in the big stores. Does anyone on here sell them or could you point me in the right direction to purchase some? Thanks

i have seen days where head color didnt matter and i have seen days where it had to be a certain color but i have always felt that head color has a lot to do with the bite

You can also pour your own jigs. I find that a 1/32 head w/ a #2 sickle hook weighs in at 1/24oz. I always default to a bigger hook when long lining. I prefer painted heads over plain, but both work. Like always, sometimes the crappie can be real finicky about it and other times you can't stop them from enhaling anything you throw at them.

I pour a 1/24 jig I normaly use. #4 sickle. Lil nasty. I weight my jigs on a grain scale I'm 1/1000 of a grain of being dead nuts! @ .08 mph they run 4.5-5' deep .

If I remember correctly I have seen several polls where unpainted heads were the majority for most people. I have always done much better on unpainted heads than painted heads. However just like anything else with those picky crappie, sometimes it has to be one way or the other, either they will hit colored heads and not unpainted, or vice versa. I have a few friends who use painted heads and sometimes I catch more and sometimes they catch more. It has just been my own personal experience that for the most part my catch rate overall over the years was extremely greater with non painted over painted. I like a number 2 hook.

Fireman ... Forget the "big stores" ... you've got a local that will custom make you any kind of jig you'd want, and he lives in Vicco, KY. His screen name is Grousefly ... aka Paul Mullins - P&S Custom Tackle.

You can contact him by :

    PM ... "Grousefly"
    Ph# ... 6066423167
    email ... [email protected]

Personally, I use a #2 Aberdeen on 1/32 & 1/16oz jigheads, and would use the same on a 1/24oz. I mostly use unpainted heads, but Grousefly will paint them pretty much any way you want them. He's my main go to man for custom jigs. And he gives discounts to Crappie.com members for orders of 100 or more. You might even run into some of his stuff at various swap meets around the central KY area.

One other KY member makes painted jigheads ... Slabeye (aka Rodney Goforth) from around the Green River area ... but I don't think he makes any 1/24oz. He's also getting into making some pretty nice looking plastics, too !!
