Default Crappie limit this morning 7/29/22

Dr Phillip Gawthrop and I had an early morning crappie trip and we’re meeting friends to fish together. Different boats though. Grin. The fishing was slow to begin the day with, but picked up a little after daylight.

The fish were deep as well as the bait balls that we saw on the graph. Some bait schools looked much larger than our boats and were settled at 15-20 feet deep. We caught fish on several different colors of Bobby Garland slab slayers.

A bonus for me was a school of small yellow bass that showed up and aggravated our lures until finally getting hooked. I kept 14 of these little yellow bass to eat. Most people throw them back as there is only about 2 bites on each fillet, but they are the best tasting fish that swims in our waters. There is no size or number limit on these little fish.

We gave our crappie to our friends that had to drive an hour and a half to get here very early this morning and we didn’t want them to go home without a cooler full of fish. They didn’t want the yellow bass and I am so glad that they didn’t because I would have given them but I really wanted them for dinner tonight. Lolol.

Yes, those are the ones. I think about 1/2 to 1/34 pound is the biggest that I have ever caught. Millions of them in our waters. If you find them around the spawn, the bigger females show up. I don’t fish for them on purpose, but when they show up, I enjoy catching them. Sharp gill flaps and spines that can stick you really good if you are not careful handling them. But I love to eat them. Grin. Next time that I catch one, I’ll take a pic and post.

Are there any tricks to preparing them for the table?
