    Default Safety First!

It looks like we are going to get ice this year in Pa. Please think before you go out on the ice to soon. Those that do ice fishing are anxious to get fishing but Please check the ice before you go to far. The least you should go out on is 4in. I prefer 6in but 4in will support a person. I have seen pictures of ice huts on 3in of ice. With your wt and the wt of your equipment on less than 4in can get you in trouble very fast. Please consider waiting until the ice is safe, safety first. A fish is not worth dieing for. Have a safe and great ice season and be safe out there. You have a family excepting you home for supper.

Trapper, no matter how much we try to preach to these guys, they won’t pay attention to us. These are the ones that will fall thru, luckily make it out, and then brag about falling thru like it’s a badge of honor. I’ve reached the point where I just say it’s their life. Gamble with it if you want to. Condolences to the family of the ones that don’t make it home for dinner.

This Mississippi boy has never experienced getting out on any ice. I don’t know if I could ever calm down enough to enjoy catching a fish! I might could if I knew you could drive a Mack truck out on it Safety First!

So, those with experiences, how about adding to this thread, with some do's and do nots of icefishing. I only went once with the neighbor.

Chaunc, I did go through the ice on Cloe dam in Jefferson co 3yrs ago. It was not a pleasant experience. Thank God there were alot of people fishing around me. They pulled me out very quickly. I may have been in the water 30 seconds. We were fishing on 8in of ice. I unfortunately walked across a thin spot and down I went. You never know where that thin spot is. I am very careful on the ice and don't take chances. As far as don't go in ice fishing, never fish alone. Always fish with a buddy or make sure there are people fishing the same ice you are on. I have since then bought a flotation ice suit and I never fish alone.
