    Default Wrong Lure!

I was out yesterday, mostly to fish for bass. But I threw a Beetle Spin in the hopes of finding some Bluegills and Crappie. I found both.

And a Bass showed up too.

But the crazy gills also wanted the much larger spinner I was throwing for bass.

Nice shots! - always tells a story.
Same here as far as gills, crappie and perch attacking the spinner-grub. Even a few bass nailed it yesterday along with these:

Curl tails and thin straight tail plastics worked best.

Guess with the turbid green color water after the last heavy downpours, the bright flash and vibration of the blade were detected further away than plastics alone.
Amazing that on some retrieves the fish hit the lure 3 or 4 times before getting hooked- and I'm talking the same retrieve! Some P.O.d fish is all I got to say!

(Hope you don't mine me sharing some recent photos.)

BTW is that a ABU Garcia baitcast reel? Never used one for light lures.

Gotta love when that happens, Spoon. I know in this particular pond, the grub tailed minnows seem to pull bass this time of year. I might change out the Beetle Spin body to a white one next time.

The reel is (or was) a 1978 ABU 1500C. Cleaned up and some polishing of the correct areas and it could throw 1/8 oz stuff pretty nicely. I've done quite a few mods to it. It can now throw 1/32 oz lures. Mind you, no long bomb casts with the 1/32 oz stuff, but the flight is straight and there is no pulling. I have it on a rod made for trout stream fishing, so it wasn't designed for long casts anyway. The end of the rod is tiny but it still handled the bass nicely.

If I ever get to PA at the right time of year, I might actually use it for stream trout action. For now, it's a fun XUL rig for panfish.

BTW, anyone can make their own spinners using stainless steel, AFW Tooth Proof fishing wire, #3.5 Colorado blade and swivel. I made those pictured.

1/32 oz on a baitcast - now that's impressive! Sure is fun catching panfish on lures no one would expect.
