Default Field Test of The Hellion 1.5

About a month ago I ordered a couple packs of plastic baits from H2O Hammer, a member sponsor from here on Crappie.com.

Based out of Wisconsin, these American made baits are very life like, caught my attention they did. Well tonight the conditions at my local fishing hole were ideal, strong current flow from the incoming creek, and warming clear waters from a couple days break in the rain. This time of year the Bass come up in these warmer creeks in search of Shad, Crayfish and other aquatic species. Rigged on a 1/48 jig head with a #8 hook, I immediately struck.....Bronze. Mr. Smalljaws was fooled on the first cast. A good fight in the current, he inhaled the Hellion.

14in, respectable and fun. A few minutes later #2 about took the rod out of my hands, and a little bigger he was.

14.5in and chunky, he have me and the UL a tussle. Here is a close up view of the bait on the jig, and a retie was obviously in order.

The next fish hurt my feelings bad, at least 16in but lost at the bank. You don’t touch them and photograph them, they don’t count. Anyway, I needed a little more weight in the strong current, so I put on a 1.5g Japanese Gekajibin (sharp as crap) jig head and worked the seams and eddies a little slower. Thump, Mr Green Carp liked the Hellion just as well, and a fat old hungry girl she was.

About 15in, now remember I am using a 1.5in bait. Do not be afraid to use small baits for big fish, they will work. It was getting dark, so I decided to tip the Hellion with a small piece of a Berkeley Waxie to add a little bulk to the profile. It worked, and a Bank Bruiser of a Smallmouth sucked in the offering and took about 25yds drag before I could get him turned. Not as big as the fish I lost, but close, and it (as were all fish tonight) too was Catch, Photograph, and Release.

A 15.5in Smallmouth is a fine fish, and the bait I was using tonight, the Hellion in Oily Root beer, is a great bait to catch these beautiful fish. Give Brian Minor and H2O Hammer Fishing Tackle a look. I think it will be worth your time.

I bought a number of Brian's baits as well, hoping to use them ice fishing. I haven't made a single ice fishing trip and there is no way I'm going out on this sketchy ice at this point of the winter, they'll have to wait for open water for me to put some to the test.

It is said that lures are made to catch fishermen, as well as fish. I got caught for sure!

Very good post Stan. I also have a few bags of the hellion and just haven’t found a day to give them a fair shot yet. They’re on one of my rods, but other than a good shad trip I’ve been stuck on a stingie bits. Next trip is going outside my comfort zone, and I’ll bet there will be a hellion story to share. They’re some really good looking baits, and Brian is a super guy to deal with. Y’all need to look em over.
