Default Question for those of you who guide

At what point do you cancel a client trip? Too much wind, rain, cold? Water to high? You have the flu? Storms or chance of? Just curious.

lightning. But i did cancel a few the year I was hospitalised with cellulitis for six days in Vanderbilt. If I have wheel chair clients the wind and rain is a factor.

No thunderstorms or winds forecast 15mph or above. I’ve cancelled 7 trips this spring. I will do without the income before I take a chance of hurting clients.

Dangerous conditions but also conditions that experience has proven to lead to a low chance of success.

I take a lot of friends fishing but im not a licensed guide. If it's cold, i'll bring extra clothes for them. Rain, and they still want to go, i'll bring extra rain wear. But two things that will either keep me on shore or head for shore if i'm out already, is lightning and highly dangerous winds. I wont jeoporidize my friends safety.

15mph winds on KY and Barkley Lakes can produce dangerous waves. I had 2 clients out 3 years ago and the brisk SW wind turned to even harder SE wind and we were on the west side of KY. I told them we were in trouble. By the time we hit the mouth of Jonathan Creek, we had taken on 4 and 5 foot rollers pretty well. It was a 6 footer that was close to the 5 footer in front of it that got us. ( We later called it the "Rogue Wave"). I took the top foot of the 6 footer over the bow and into the floor of my Bay Pro 203. I never let up and we made the turn into Jonathan with water above our ankles in the floor but I never got off the throttle. To do so would have been disastrous. I decided then incidents like that will only let you get away a few times before you don't get out of it.

It is almost comical to see boaters in their $80K+ boats who have zero idea how to navigate REALLY rough water. You can't learn it on YouTube. You learn it by being out there in terrible conditions.

Bad storms with lightening predicted, if I'm so sick I can't do it, or a death in the family. If I have to cancel I'll usually offer them a trip at a highly reduced rate or a freebee.
