I have always fished shiners only when I lived in Louisiana.
With harder access to shiners I'm thinking about trying jigs.
Anyone prefer jigs?

We use jigs/plastics tipped with minnows for spider rigging around here. Adds color and size to the offering. And I'm sure there are those that add Crappie Nibbles or Power Bait Balls or Crappie Bites and/or spay scents (like Slab Sauce) to the whole shebang.
And don't think for a minute that a jig with a 2" plastic body on it & a 2.5" minnow nose hooked on top of that is only going to entice Slabs, because of the size of the offering. Plenty of times a "dink" will be caught on that conglomeration.

I use jigs 100% of the time, but do not have any problem with minnoes !! It's what ever you have confidence in! I hate The hassle with minnies.

I don't spider rig but only use Southern Pro tubes . I have seen a test once on my home lake . A pair of spider riggers with 8 poles tried minnows on one side (4 ) and jigs on other side (4 ). They reported about the same catch that day on each side . Sure cheaper to run jigs and less trouble.
Typically I ll fish jigs tipped with minnows most of the time but there are definitely times when jigs by themselves are great. All in what u used to I guess. Not sure how clear water u fishing but my limited clear water experience pushed me to minnows only on red hook. Just my two cents.

Just depends on the conditions but I use both. I don’t like sticking my hands in freezing cold minnow water so only jobs when cold. Run minnow in the summer months. Just my two cents.

In the spring when water temps get toward 60 degrees, straight jigs will work just as good as minnows. In the fall gnats tipped with minnows will catch larger
fish. In winter when the water temps are in the 40s to low 50s straight minnows will out catch anything. Summer time, you will not beat crankbaits. That has
been my experience over the last 10 years.
