Default What rifle for a 10 year old?

My 10 year old son is getting into deer hunting and we need to purchase a suitable rifle. We are currently hunting with an old single shot 20 gauge using slugs. It will certainly do the job, just not at distance.

I'm thinking hard about buying a lever 30-30 and making him learn on that. Maybe a Marlin 30-30? Other folks said a .243 would be the ticket. I'm sure they would both work, thoughts/opinions are welcome.

I started with exactly that, 30-30 . I would opt for a single shot breakdown model for easy / safe loading and unloading(letting hammer down after loading) made me nervous . A 308 or a 7 mm-08 in a cva optima elite would work well .I wonder if any of the single shot guns come in a 30-30?

Cut my teeth with a model 99 / Winchester 30-30, very fine gun although top eject, but very accurate up to a 100 yards. The 30-30 is a tried and true weapon for brush busting in hardwoods and thickets, what kind of terrain are y'all hunting? Long shots, close quarters in hardwoods? .243 is hard to beat for youth, but don't over look the 7mm-08 either.

6.5 Grendel in an AR platform. Two of my Grandsons have them, mild recoil. Will fit them the rest of their lives. Youth rifle only till the grow up then you have to get them something else.

My grandson is 9 and has been shooting a 243 and killing deer with it. His Dad and I am fixing up a spare 270 for him to try this year. We cut the stock and put on a recoil pad. He will shoot from a lead sled on the bench to get him used to it. Then we will see how he does in a stand. He will always be shooting from a stand with a prop to help hold the gun. I wanted to buy him a 7-08 with a can on it, but his Dad wanted to let him try this. We'll see how it goes.

my oldest daughter started with a bull barrel single shot 223 ….ZERO recoil and it was inexpensive and is accurate as heck .
new England firearms youth model .
she made older fellas at the rifle range feel bad with it the VERY first time we ever used it ….
that thing will flat out drill a bullseye at 100 yards bigtime
them ole fellas was like WOW she been shooting a while I bet while they was peeping at her target
I was like nope first time she ever used it is today ….
