Can a Humminbird Ethernet Cable Wire be Spliced
So I connected my Humminbird Helix 10 to my older Humminbird 898 using the ethernet cable . I must say I did a darn good job of itEverything worked as it should; but, there was one screw left to reattach an access panel, which I had removed to hide the ethernet cable. So, I put the screw back in and turned my electronics on to make sure everything was ok. Yep, I put the screw right through the cable.
Trust me on this, this project was a sure enough job. If I need to replace the cable, so be it. But if can be spliced I'll save several hours of work. Does anyone know if the ethernet wire can be spliced?

The shielding will be the problem. If not done properly it will cause problems such as ground loops. Unless you have considerable experience with it get a new cable.

Back in my working days we use to splice them. We cut the bad area out, put new ends on, and used a coupler to connect them. But there is no reason why you can't strip the wires back and twist them together. Take your time and do one wire at a time and be sure to match colors. There will be 4 pairs or 8 wires plus a bare wire (shield). Some of them use to be wrapped with foil but I don't know if they still do that or not.

Thanks to everyone for advice and guidance. After looking closely at the cable, I don't trust my abilities enough to attempt a splice. I'll just have to redo it all with a new cable and I'll know everything will be right--as long as I don't put another screw through it. You folks are great.
