Thread: Probing Pickett Puddles

On the advice of a local I encountered on the last trip, I tried Pickett's "Twin Lakes" this morning...

...for 30 min. That's about all it took to discover that the bigger of the two "twins" is no deeper than 5'. Even Dayton could wade all the way across (well.............almost.)

Moving right along, I did the shake, rattle, and roll (love those unpaved roads) over to the Reservoir for an encore of my recent trip. Water was much cooler this time (54 vs. mid 60s) and the small/medium specs were still biting. I bumped into a couple of regulars & confirmed my suspicion that this lake is choked with small specs. They urged my to keep everything I caught & help thin out the overpopulation. They also repeated what others have said--there are large ones in this lake. You couldn't prove it by me, but late fall through spawning season is the time, they said, and I'm not giving up quite yet.

At least it turned out to be a nice day on the water.

So what does someone do when there are lots of smaller crappie and you want to find larger ones? With some species you can adjust to try and find bigger ones, like trying to fish for the bigger fish at the bottom of a school or going to a little deeper water. Anything work for crappie? Or do you just bring more minnows?
