Thumbs down OT - Reynolds Metals

Read on the NBC 12 website that Reynolds is closing three Richmond plants which means ~500 folks will be losing thier jobs over the next few months. First round of lay-off's starting in December, plants to be closed by early 2009. This is bad news, I know several folks that this will affect. Let's pray that all these folks will be able to get jobs elsewhere.

Is that the plant over on Commerce?

    Alcoa?

That sucks if that's true but honestly it doesn't surprise me if it's the same plant I'm thinking of. I've toured that plant and it was very dirty inside with LOTS of clutter & scrap/rework strewn about. Sorry to hear about that but my plant will gladly take some of their better workers if that's the case...we're hiring

I hate to hear when those mass layoffs occur. You have to think that among those layed off there are some longtimers that have worked their butts off to make the co. $$, but there are surely some slack!@#$$ that contributed to the thing going downhill (management especially included)
If you know any of those good workers that get hit, put them in touch with me. We have plenty of work and my boss is looking for a project manager trainee to work with me.

Squirrel hunter if things keep going in the direction they have been for the last few months in the asphalt industry and road building construction, I might put in for that "project manager trainee" position myself.:D Does the POSITION come with a big salary, unlimited time off, vehicle, cell phone and a full benifit package like you have?

Sorry to hear that for those folks. I may be in the same situation here. Our company is in talks to sell out and rumor is it will happen in the next few weeks. We have a older factory that most likely will be shut down, thats 1200 people. Been knowing it is coming since we have been in such bad financial health. That is why the boat is gone, tightened up the financials on my side. Been in this industry 20 years and have seen a many company shut down, layoffs etc. while it all moves overseas. Time to find a new career.

It a terrible thing to lose a job like that. Years invested, think you are secure and many of that age don't have the education paperwork required for so many other jobs. Really stinks.

This is a bummer of a thread.

Man, kinda scary to hear the same story from so many folks.

I feel ya Berdman, one of my coworkers moved across the street to us from your place and he keeps in touch with people over there....ya'lls financials have been pretty bad. I'm pulling for you guys...sad thing is, we lost some of OUR better employees to YOU guys....so I feel sorry for them too.

There is definitely NO garauntee with American manufacturing right now.

Nope these trade deals are killing manufacturing in this country. I saw the cotton mills disappear. Only took 5 years. we went from 12 million bale capacity to 4 million in 5 years. N.C. took the largest hit and many of those folks were up in their 50s good when they lost their jobs. What the heck do you do then? N.C. just doesn't have the jobs to replace them either. Bush told them that they were gonna have to retrain for 21st century jobs. 3 questions were asked. Who wants to do that in their 50s? What the hell is a 21st century job? Where the hell are they in N.C.? Y'all work in a shaky industry right now. Manufacturing ought to be who is getting bailed out, not Wall Street. I'm pulling for all You fellas. Hope everything smooths over and works out. Job security is a comforting thing but no one is %100 percent safe but the safer You are the less worry in your life. That is for sure. CF
