Thumbs up Pretty good day on Chickahominy River

The fish have finally arrived at their winter grounds on the Chickahominy River near the dam. There were large schools of fish everywhere. I got there just before slack tide and the tide was very very high. The fish holding in deeper water were in a negative mood but the ones holding on the first drop near the edge of the channel were feeding after the tide started moving a little.

There were five boats out today and all reported great action in the morning before the tide went slack.

I got a total of 28 crappie and kept 14. Those 14 weighed 14 pounds. Most of the ones I kept were between 12" and 13". Very few fish were less than 10". One boat even got a 12" yellow perch. That ought to bring Tony out of hiding.

The water temp was 41-44 depending on which depth finder you believe. Most boats were using minnows. Those that were using jigs found a 1/32 ounce head with a small tube jig worked best. About 20 of my fish came on the small jigs.

PM me if you are not familiar with fishing this area and want more specific information. Shoer, You can get there and back in the Onion just fine.

I gave you the area in my PM reply. Minnows (other boats) and 1/32 ounce tube jigs (red/char, red/yellow, and black/white) worked well. I also got a couple of nice ones on a 2" black/pink crappie ringer.

You'll see the fish on your depth finder. They are stacked in there very heavy right now and are suspended above the bottom.

It was about 1/2 and 1/2 for light bites and hitting like a ton of bricks. All of them fought extremely hard though. Those tidal fish are strong.:D

Cool. that sounds like fun. That ain't very far from me. I might need more info. I have off all next week. Going to hit the Ches. Bay for striper which ever day has the lightest winds, and going to try crappie at least one other.

    Thanks for the report.

Nice day Keith. I have no qualms with takin the Onion in the river this time of year but summer months you wont catch me out there in a 14' jon.
Keith, there is a good launch very near where you're fishin. Dont remember the name but remember when we left the other day I took a right and we came out on hwy 60 right at Stewarts grocery. Take the same trip but take a right at the 1st stop sign after leaving either Ed Allens or Rockahock. It will take you to Chickahominy Shores subdivision (and beyond). Pass the entrance to Chick. Shores and less than a mile further on the right you will see the sign and short road leading to it. It is last stop for bigger boats before getting to the dam. Kinda weird- out in the middle of podunk, agricultural New Kent Co. is a fleet anchored you'd expect to see at Lynnhaven Harbor.
Did you keep any? If so how wormy were they? The locals tell me the parasite thing is cyclic. I don't know myself. Almost every speckled trout we used to catch in TX was wormy but they dont hurt ya and dont have to be removed before cooking but we always did. Just poke the tip of fillet knife where theres a red blotch on the fillets, squeeze, and a miniature spaghetti
lookin worm would come out easily.
Thats a nice average size, sounds like fun.

Dayton, let me know if you need details. I may try again on Monday.

One of my best fishing days was in the same area on the Chick on December 24, 1984 during a warm spell. I got a mess of crappie and several bass that day. The two biggest bass weighed 6 pounds 6 ounces and 6 pounds 10 ounces. Both caught on a white 2" curly tail cast to some submerged timber near a creek mouth. It is hard to admit, but I used to fish for bass every once in a while back then on purpose.:o

I caught my first citation, a 1 pound 4 ounce yellow perch in the same area on February 18, 1984.

Shoer, there were not too many worms in the meat. I think I only cut 4 worms out of the 28 fillets.

You can see it from that restaurant but it is on the other side of the dam.
