I buy some parts, make some parts (these can be bought also, I just like to make what I can), and assemble my own rigs.

I spend an hour or so every week at home repairing and rigging new C & C rigs. I also carry around 6 extra rigs with me every time I go out. I just sit down with some 3/4 or 1oz barrel sinkers, three way swivels, my favorite jigs, and some hooks and rig them up. It's time spent at home that pays off on the water.

I've learned from fishing with my wife that when spider rigging specific structure it doesnt pay to have someone in the back of the boat as I put my forward poles directly over the structure leaving the back poles on the outer fringes. If I was searching for new spots then poles off the back would be helpful but that's not the case recently, I have so many specific places to fish that I'm not spending much time searching right now. I thought of offering one of the out of towners a seat in my boat but I honestly don't think they would catch much unless I try to position the rear of the boat over the structure which would leave me not catching much. Those that don't spider rig might not understand what I'm trying to explain, Keith, does this make sense to you?

Only 6 extra rigs. When I'm fishing close to wood, I go through 8 or more rigs per day. I usually only lose a small portion of the rig (either bottom or top bait) and get the rest back. I drop the damaged rigs in the boat and repair/rebuild them during the week before I go out again.

Your back seater philosophy makes sense. However, the boat can be positioned so both anglers have access to it if the cover is large enough, but this makes a lot more work for the one operating the trolling motor. The other strategy to use is set the back poles deeper and fish them around the outside edges of the cover while the front poles are just over the cover.

Bottom rigs will work, but I think they are a bit compact. The 99 cent crappie rig by Eagle Claw (walmart) quite a bit longer and the main line is mono, not steel. Plus, the distance between the two arms can be adjusted up or down. The only thing keeping them in place is that the main line goes thru the red bead and back thru it making a brake. Easy to loosen and adjust.

Tap, try this with your wife (wow, that reads differently then it sounded in my head). Fish two people, one front and one back, but just fish out one side of the boat. Your 2-3-4 poles on the right and here one out the right side. Then just make passes to the structure on that side. That way, you can also make tight right hand turns and your poles stay in the zone. Keep it straight and your wife gets the sweet spot!

Try it. If it works with your wife, I will come down and do it with ya!
