Almost every crappie I filleted today was loaded with eggs. I had heard that crappie in Florida spawn twice but I had no idea that the same held true in Virginia. Just recently I got an electric filet knife which exposes the insides of the crappie, prior to this with a regular filet knife I never noticed as I rarely cut them open.

The egg sacks are probably just developing for next spring's spawn. It is only 3 or 4 months away.

Some of my last catch had eggs also. How do you like your electric knife?
I have always taken satisfaction in the "feel" of using a reg fillet knife-have never held an electric in hand, but am thinking I might enjoy one. Think I want the 12 volt model so I can fillet where I want and not have to be near a power outlet.

I'm a pretty lousy fillet'er and the electric knife does a better job for me. I've only used it a few times now but really like it. I've heard that the biggest draw back on the battery ones is that they don't seem to last as long as one would wish.
It never dawned on me that these would be next springs eggs. I was just surprised to see eggs this time of year.

Ran into a good friend last Sunday and he said he'd been catching crappie in the Nottoway for two weeks (at that time) full of eggs. He hits the river hard, and he said this was very early for the river fish to have eggs.Originally Posted by TapOut64

I was at Table Rock Lake in MO 3 weeks ago and Bull Shoals AR 2 weeks ago. Caught a bunch of Large, Small, and Kentucky Bass. ALL had eggs in them. I thought it was strange too. Either they have in preparation of upcoming spawn or they didn't spawn last season for what ever reason. Females just continue to confuse us.....
I have a Rapala Filet Knife, I LOVE IT! You can either plug it into the wall, or hook it to a battery whatever you want. I got mine at Wal-Mart. I bought it to filet trout, it does a perfect job, I actually do a better job with it than I did with the regular filet knife. ~ KevinOriginally Posted by TapOut64
I've had a Mister Twister electric for years and its been great. At least until I dropped it a few weeks ago.

it`s not uncommon for crappie to have eggs in them year round.

I use an electric knife too. It's all I use. Can fillet a crappie in 30 seconds. Don't take long to fillet a mess like that. CF
