    Default Western Branch Report-Thursday

Windy and rainy. Of couse, that's just an observation from my Mountaineer. :D I just got back from a service call in Petersburg and stopped by the Suffolk lakes on my way home. Lake Prince is busting at the seams and overflowing it's spillway into Western Branch like I've never seen. Western Branch was down 2.9' just this past weekend but now looks to be nearly at full pool. I drove by the Burnt Mills spillway expecting to see it overflowing but surprisingly it was not. The best I could see, it is real close to being at full pool and will probably be overflowing tonight or tomorrow. This would be the first time it overflowed it's spillway since they closed the lake over three years ago. Oh well, I'll be out there Saturday to see how the crappie respond to all this rain.

When I started fishing the Suffolk lakes around 1990 I only fished Prince. Years later I fished Burnt Mills almost exclusively but when it closed switched over to Western Branch. I've tried the Portsmouth owned lakes but without much luck. Not much of a river fisherman. Any yes, I'm after the big crappie. I'd rather have quality than quantity.
