Had another beauitiful day on the Pamunkey River on Monday. Started fishing around 10:00 AM to catch the last few hours of the outgoing tide and a couple hours of the incoming. Started off great. Had been fishing my normal crankbaits when I decieded to rig up a couple of left over minnows from my Beaverdam trip and drift them on a couple of my 16" crappie poles with 6lb test line on them. Got one setup about 7' deep and was working on setting up the next one when I seen the first pole was bent over double in the water. Picked it up and held on. Fish fought me up and down the creek for over 20 minutes. Finalley got it near the surface and seen it was a giant bue cat. We wrestle back and forth a little longer until I was able to slip my new net under it. WOW what a fight. The fish was 39" long. Yes! It finalley qualified me for a Master Angler fishing award from the VA Game and Fisheries. Had been stuck on 4 species for awhile. Had come so close so many times with bass, gar, bowfin, bream and white perch but this one finalley made it offical. I was kinda shook up for the rest of the day:D
Did manage to keep fishing and caught some more nice cats up to 8 pounds, several bass, a carp and of course some ring perch. 2 more citation yellow perch, 1lb 4ozs and 1 lb 7ozs. Biggest one was 13-3/4" long. This brings my total to the year to 33 perch citations. :D
Caught fish on crankbaits and minnows until the tide changed then nothing. Fish were hanging out in about 7' of water. Not a huge quantity but lots of quality. A day I will remember for a long time.

Good job Roy. What kind of crankbaits do you like for the perch? You are the only one I have seen use them but it sure works for ya!!
Nice catch and congrats on the Master Angler. Those are some nice fish! I'm like you, I'm stuck on 4 species with the saltwater. Only need 2 more, but, oh well, there's always next year!![]()
