Question Anyone plan on catching shad for the JR Bash?

Just wondering if there are good locations to catch "live-in" JR Shad with a cast net (not that I'm any good at it, but my partner has some experience from his Striper days on LKA, and he has several nets).

I've never done this, but it sounds good, in principle.

    Your thoughts . . .?

    Bring minnows.

The gizzards are too big. Even the young ones. The threadfins take a shad barrel, pumps, filter, defoamer and two acts of congresss to keep alive. There was a population of this years herring/hickory shad about a month ago. I have not heard anyone say they have seen them lately. But, even a month ago they were just a bit larger than a good medium minnow, and I don't know how they would live.

It there are here, you can catch them two places. Two spillways just down river from Osborne landing (less than a mile). One above the Power plant (two pipes), that is the water from the water treatment plant. The other is one of the power plant discharge, that is below the power plant. These are only about 300 yards apart from each other.

The twin pipes, the water goes from 30' to 6 inches in about a boat lenght, so be careful throwing right up at the discharge (but that is where they might be)

The lower discharge, actually two spillways side by side, has a row of wood pilings between them. You will see them. As long as you don't throw over top of them, there is nothing else to get hung on. This is a great place to get brim for catfishing. Last I saw the young hickorys, there were in the left spillway of these two. Right up in the mouth of it.

So, just to recap. Bring minnows and your favorite jig/grub combo. Don't forget some heavier jigs to get them down in the current (if that is where you fish). This water does move.

I was going to tell you about the same place that Dayton mentioned....the twin pipes outflow.

I threw my cast net once there and got so many small 1-2" shad in it that I spent about 30 minutes picking them all out....and they were all over my boat (including a few stepped on ones ground into the carpet).

Dayton's right though, they don't last too long alive....and small catfish sure do love them.

Default OK . . . you convinced me!

I'll tell my friend Gary to leave the cast nets at home!

Besides, "Paddle Fishin" is gonna hitch a ride with me and Gary, and he says he'll bring six dozen minnows; so I guess we'll have things covered with PF's minnows and my jigs and grubs, etc.

    See y'all Sunday!!
