I was seeing if anyone has been to Somerville lately scince it has cooled down I usually go in the dead of winter up till post spawn but never this early I heard that you get about 2 keepers out of every 20 fish. I just dont want to waste the trip. If anyone wants to head up there with me that lives in the bryan/ college station area that hasnt been or hasnt been in a while I can show you the ropes and will even clean the fish. I verticle jig off hanging brush pile with jigs.
Went on a trip w/ that kid last March, good fisherman.I'm from In. and we had 4 prosperous trips out there.Even brought one home to get mounted.Think we came close to limiting out everytime out.Good honest guy give him a holler and take him w/ you.
Was there on 10-7, water temps. were 78 to 81 degrees depending on were you were. Water slightly stained due to rising water levels from recent rains. Fished from 12-5pm, caught 17 fish with 4 keepers off 14-16ft piles. Fish seemed to be on tops at 10-12ft. Tried 8-10 ft piles with all throwbacks caught off of them. Was verticle jigging with 1/8oz, 2" Panfish assassins in black, curly shad color. Also tried every other color with black-chartuse being the next best. Bigger fish seemed to like the shad rather than the chartuse. I think giving it another "cool" spell, they might group up better. Tried 4-6 ft stumps, but those " green carp " seemed to be there.
Just went last weekend 11/7. (4) of us = 40 keepers and about that many throw-backs. Most fish were between 6:00am and Noon. 14-16ft. some at 20+ feet.
We were fishing brush piles, drop offs and sunken piers by Big Creek Marina. Biggest one was 16 inches.
Gray jigs early worked well. Later it was dark gray with black/red tails.
Water temp - 67*
I have also had good luck fishing the marina with minnows and a split shot. $5 all day if you dont have a boat!

Reason: date and temp.

I am a former TX resident of 11 yrs. Me & the missus were 62 miles from Somerville and it was our home lake. I put well over 80 Xmas trees in there over the yrs-you mighta caught that one on one of my piles.
I caught 2 over 17" outta there over the yrs but only measured em back then. I caught 2 here that were 17 & 17.25", and weighed 2 lb 10 & 2 lb 13 oz.
Thats a dandy slab for sure. Congrats!!!
What is noteworthy is that all 4 I have caught over 17" were caught 2 & 2-on the same day and just minutes apart from each other. The 2 here in VA were caught in late March during spawn right on the bank but the 2 from Somerville were caught in July in 13 ft of water over brush near the old defunct ramp at Yegua Creek Park.
