Question Want to try crappie fishing (Houston)

    Hey everyone!

I want to try crappie fishing. I live in Houston (SW corner of 610 loop).
Is anyone out there willing to teach?

    Thanks,
    Neil

I am not to good with crappie fishing yet, and doubt I will be good but I enjoy trying. Do you have your own boat?

Best time for bank fishing for crappie is in the spring. There are a few places on Conroe and Houston. Best place on Conroe I know is Scotts Ridge Lake Conroe Access

I'm trying to learn how to catch 'em, and I live in Arkansas so I might not be much help but some people I know who fish off the bank look for trees that have fallin into the water and then fish them, I have seen people even walk down the trunk of the tree, allowing them to jig in the tree tops farther out, but be careful if you go in your probably gonna scare the fish away!
nothing beats time on the water

You don't have to use a boat to catch crappie. Lotsa crappie are caught from boat docks or at fishing marinas. Bank fishing can be ideal for catching crappie too.

To learn some of the tricks of catching crappie, I advise to do a search on Youtube after typing in "crappie fishing".

Good luck, Stinkfinger from the Oklahoma forum. But a native Texan.
Never, never attempt to dry out shad in a $1000 Maytag convection oven......... never!

Easiest place to learn , a 2 hr drive for ya, but worth it, go to Lake Somerville ( hwy 290 to Brenham, North on hwy 36 Past Somerville to Lyons, west on FM60 to State rd. 4 ) to Big Creek marina. They have a really good crappie house that you can fish in for $5. They're open 6am to 6pm Mon to Thurs. and 6am to 8pm Fri. and Sat. Mon. and Tues. it's free. Just watch some of the regulars there on what they're doing, some will help, others won't. I was there Sat. 10-24, fished from 6-9:30am and caught 6, There were a lot of short fish being caught, but at least they were biting. Somerville Marina has a crappie house also, but I feel that it's not as productive as Big Creeks. Lake Houston and Conroe have none if I remember right.

I have never fished the Marina at Sommerville but my saltwater fishing buddy takes his teenage daughter there all the time and they do very well.

I also want to learn to crappie fish and have been doing a lot of reading up on it. I have a boat and am always looking for fishing partners but I am retired and prefer fishing during the week. If either of you can ever fish in the middle of the week, let me know at curtis.junge@yahoo.com and we will try to get together.
