Lake Stamford
The Lake Stamford Marina and Park has been sold to an individual who is a personal friend. In the past, the marina and park have been leased and the upkeep has suffered. Cleanup of the entire marina and park has began with potential plans to pull the old crappie house out of the water and build a new one in the coming months. He is serious enough that he is taking bids currently for a new crappie house.
Look for upcoming changes, with a cleaner and stocked store carrying bait and equipment. He is also redoing the cabins which will be available fairly soon.
In regard to crappie fishing. It is not easy unless you have planted your own brushpiles. I caught some really nice crappie on two brushpiles (10 feet down over 18 feet deep)and some rock outcrops along some deep ledges. Preferred color, white/chart and pink/black/pink.
Catfishing is very good on jug lines and trotlines. I had limited success slapping grasshoppers against the bank.
Good Fishing and keep your ears open to the changes at the Marina and Park. A big improvement is being made and forthcoming, drive by and take a look if you are in the area.

Lake Stamford Marina - Update September 1, 2009
New ownership of the entire Stamford Marina and surrounding acreage, previously owned by the City of Stamford. I am providing the following due to phone calls and emails for people interested in contacting the new owner and asking about what has changed.
New Owner: Mr. Vance Proctor (Name:Lake Stamford Marina)
Store Phone Number: (325) 773-2095
120 Stamford Marina Drive - Haskell, TX 79521
The old store is not open; they are operating out of Cabin #1 (estimate 3 months for opening). Cabin store has a limited selection of food items, and some catfish bait, but NO live bait and expectations are for it to be three months or more before he offers live bait. (Live bait at Ward's Camp or the Anchor) The old crappie house is beyond repair and will be pulled out in the future. The owner has started taking bids to build a new crappie house and will place it exactly where the old one exists, but with much more additional mooring and stabilization. No way this will be done and completed before early summer 2010 (Forget this winter, it is not going to happen). Walkway is down in the water and not usable on the old dock. Boat ramps are in great shape and the courtesy dock has been improved.
Most of the work effort thus far involved: the cabins, the RV hookups and electrical upgrades, and working on the shelters for RV and Tents. Several have asked if I could find out the rates:
RV and Shelter = 50.00 per night (14 RV spots and 6 shelters)
RV only = 35.00 per night
Shelter = 30.00 per night
Tents (1-2) = 15.00 per night
Tents (3-4) = 20.00 per night
Shelter and
Tents (1-2) = 40.00 per night
Cabin = 65.00 per night
1/2 Day
Shelter = 20.00 per night
Hope this answers the questions posed to me. If you need additional answers please contact Vance Proctor at the above number. I have not stayed in any of the facilities so I can't verify how good or how bad they are.
Fishing Report: Black bass are very good to excellent, catfish are excellent on jug lines and trotlines. Most importantly, Crappie fishing is slow and they are hard to locate due to high water temps. Sand bass are very good.
Lake is falling hard and water temps are 80 plus/minus.
Best of Luck in your Fishing,
Ron, Mud-Dabber

Any update on how the marina's going, anybody? Sounds like I'll be moved away from Abilene before the crappie house is finished. Poop.

February 11, 2010 Update
Lake is up almost 3 feet in the last two weeks, with 10 inches of snow today. Crappie barge has not been repaired or a new one has not been built. Barge remains closed. Cabin renovation are complete, RV area renovation is complete and store renovation have been almost been finished, they are painting as we speak. Projected to be completed hopefully by the end of March. The crappie barge is a large expense and a time table for completion has not been determined.
Lake should be really HOT this spring with the new water covering many of the dead reeds, cattails and lilly pads. Water temp. at present is around 45-46, so it is going to take multiple days of warm, sunny weather to get the crappie in the mood.
Fishing for blue cats is very good at present on cut carp, cut drum and shad if you can obtain it.

Ron, Mud-Dabber

Good to hear about the marina. We are having a crappie tournament on Hubbard Creek Lake February 27th as a fund raiser for the class of 2010, guaranteed $1,000 if you know of anyone interested. Call me @ 254-488-2650 for more details.
