Ft. Phantom Hill Lake - Abilene
Water temps. 70-73. Crappie are toward the very tail end of the spawn. On 05-20-08 the crappie fishing is much slower than past weeks as they are finishing up the spawn and much more finicky than the last several weeks. Lots of small crappie with a few keepers. Several still with eggs, but the fish are really looking beat up from the stress of spawning.
Guys, the sand bass fishing is ON. The shad are spawning on the banks and sand bass are everywhere in the early mornings to mid mornings, the fishing is nothing short of outstanding.
I have been using a medium size chrome Pop R with a tail on it and catching fish almost every cast from 7:30 to 9:00, then I just quit as I am tired of it. If you want to catch 100, then start chunking and winding as it is that good, remember the limits. A few medium sized hybrids (4 lbs.) are mixed in, suprizinly no real big hybrids for me. Banks are just swarming with shad, the house cats and black birds are on the banks catching what shad the sand bass are running ashore during their attacks.
Full moon, so don't know how long it will last, but it is the best of the year right now and is perfect for taking the kiddos and mamma if they want to catch a fish. I want hardly use anything, but a topwater when they are biting like this, but I think you could throw a safety pin out there and get bit, it is that good. If you want more details just email me.
Regards,
Mud-Dabber
