Default Big Jigs = Big Crappie

I am no expert in crappie fishing or jig tying , but I have been doing more
of both in the last couple of months. I bought some 1/4 oz heads with
a #1 sickle hook . I was thinking about using these for spec trout, sandies
and hybrids. I tied up a couple with chartruse and orange bucktail.
I got to thinking about a couple of brushpile in 17 ft of water and decided to
give them a try. I've caught quite a few 2 lb crappie on this jig.
I really like the " feel " of the heavier jig when fishing deep.
I still use a smaller jig for other applications, but I think I will stay with
the big one for the brushpile , standing timber and bridge pilings.

What is the biggest jig yall use ?

I would post a picture , but my jigs are still ugly, the fish don't mind , but
you guys would laugh.

good luck
Mo

I have been using 1/4 oz. for a couple of years now when fishing deeper water and sometime even shallow water if the wind is blowing. I do have some with a #1 Sickle, but more for bass with marabou. I also think the bigger hooks will hang up more in brush. Know a couple of guides that use #6 or smaller hooks on 1/8 oz.

I years past I have also caught some of the bigger crappie on small jigs.

I don't like 1/4 ounce but I do like big jigs. We use Rocky Top Tubes and I really like the large tube. It is about 3" long. I've been playing with hooks sizes and found that anything above a #2 and it gets hung much more. I use a #4 most of the time.
A 1/4 ounce falls like a rock and I like a slower fall.

We've been on a good roll with the big Rocky Tops. 4 tournaments, 3 wins, 1 second and big fish of the tournament in all 4 this year.

We've weighed the largest stringers ever on two trails using these jigs.

If your interested, you can find them at www.finnytribe.com I buy these jigs and get no discount so I really don't care if anyone uses them but they do work.

Ive been useing 1/4oz jigs for about 10yrs. I use Cabelas Fisghermen Series jigheads they have a #1 hook and aren't too big for any size crappie. I use the barbed collar for tubes and the non barbed to tie my hand tied jigs with. In my own opion I don't think they hang up as much and when they do it's easier to get them unhung. The 1/4oz jig helps you stay down in the strike zone were the fish are when you are moving in the wind. I haven't tried the RockyTops yet but I do know that Jerry and Paul have been winning with them. I do believe that BIGGER JIGS DO WORK!
GoodLuck

I think I am hanging up less with the 1/4oz. The "feel" at 12 feet and deeper
is so much better that I can tell the difference between the jig bumping brush and
a hit. So I rarely set the hook on a stick. I am still using the first one of these I tied.
I set up a special " brushpile rig ". Nine foot rod , nice spinner with 7 bearings and
14 lb test braid . With this rig I have precise depth control, great feel , and the jig
drops to the strike zone right away. I have amazed myself with the number of
2lb crappie I have caught over the past 30 days with this setup. I should take the
jig back to the tying room and make some exact copies before I lose it.

good luck

Ugly jigs are pretty with 2 pounders hanging on them. You ought to go ahead and put a picture of that jig on here so we can decide how ugly it is.

I like both the 1/4 and 1/8 depending on depth, wind and tube size. I put more stock in color than size..... as long as I can get it down there... I like the lightest line and smallest hook. Just works for me.

I fish both Tyler and Palestine. I live close to Lake Tyler so I find myself fishing it for crappie most of the time. I like to fish Plaestine in the winter and fall for crappie around the 155 bridge and upper end. I think Tyler has some awsome crappie fishing in it though. My wife and I had 38 last Sat. and was home by 10:30am, of coarse we started at 5:00am.
PS They still catch em at Oscar and Denvers, during the spring and early summer. Good fishing.
