I don't quite know what to think of my 1st trip to fish on cherokee. I know there is some good fishing there, I just didn't find it. I fihsed German creek and found some fish in 15-20' of water, mostly suspended at 8' or so. I did catch one crappie that looked like she was ready to explode. I also brought in one striper and three large mouths. I was trolling jigs and drifting minnows. I tried fishing shallow, casting jigs to the banks, with no luck. The guy at the bait shop said they were catching them in 2' of water last week, but hadn't heard any reports this week. When I was fishing shallow, I saw tons of tiny fry jumping from the water as I would bring my jig back to the boat. I don't know if they were crappie fry or fry from something else, but I would venture to say that many crappie have spawned and many more want to and are ready, but the weather has them screwed up. If we would just get two or three really nice days in a row, we could really catch some fish up shallow. This looks like one of those years where they all spawn at different times over an elongated period of time. You may still be catching fish shallow in may if the weather doesn't turn nice for a while.
