Rod Holder / Spidder Rigging
Just getting started into spider rigging and really dont want to break the pocket too much since I'm not sure that I will like this way of fishing. Have been looking for the cheapest way possible. Here is my list so far
Rod holder = Smith
Rods = MonksCrappie.com | SILSTAR LIMIT SERIES CRAPPIE RODS
Reels = Fisherman's Factory Outlet: 300XE Spinning Reel
I will be using 2 10", 2 12". I know the rods aren't the most expensive but hopefully will get me by. Question is that rod holder any good. I will get the 3 piece removable 4 rods.
Please chime in and let me know if I'm heading in the right direction and if you all see something that can be replaced thats cheaper or better.
Thanks for the help.

I would go with 4 12ft rods instead of the 10's. Other than that everything looks good. All I use are the smith rod holders. They are cheap and effective. I also paln on ordering the inexpensive silstar rods from monk as well to try them out and have heard great things about them. As far as you liking spider rigging, I enjoy it very much and for ledges, creek channels, etc it is the way to go. I always prefer single pole fishing, but there are times when slow trolling is the only way to go. I think you will be happy with your setup. I only suggest doubling it to 8 rods once you get a handle on it.
FYI there are cheaper reels you can use if you prefer. Give Lance at Grizzly Jig a call and he can set you up with similar spinning reels for 8.95 each. 1-800-305-9866

First, I have used the Smith type holders (I have a variation of that style on my boat) but I can tell you from first hand experience that Hi-Tek's beat them all to stuffing.

My fishing buddy went with the Hi-Tek's and I was VERY impressed. The engineering is first class as is the build quality.
Last, instead of those refurbished reels, I would go with the Shimano IX series (pick the one that has the line capacity you need, the little IX 1000 is perfect for spider rigging and even some longline trolling duty.)
MonksCrappie.com | SHIMANO IX 1000R Reel
Monk's has those reels at a very good price. I have a set myself and I was impressed with the quality of these inexpensive reels. Shimano makes good stuff.
I have never seen nor used the Silstar rods so I can't comment there, but I would go for a longer rod than 10 or 12 feet. 14 feet is about the 'Sweet Spot' length for spider rigging IMHO.

He is trying to go as inexpensive as possible for just starting out. There are better setups out there that cost more money, but for starting out and going cheap, he has the right idea on all of it.

WTC,
Do you know which reels you were referring to @ Grizzly.
I hate rear drag and quickfire reels.
So 14ft rods would be better than the 12ft. Whichever I get they will be all the same size.

the silstar rods only go to 12ft i think. And the longer the rod the better but 12's are much easier to handle starting out than 14's. I use only 12ft rods, I had 14 wally marshal rods and they are ok but i prefer the 12's. Starting out though 12's would be better IMO.
Not sure about the reels. I just know for inexpensive reels those are pretty good. It all depend son what you prefer though. If you think you might be in it for the long haul, and I think you will. You may go ahead and sepns a little extra on the reels. Again there are better quailty setups out there, but I have ALWAYS used smith holders and they get the job done and are easy to manage.
