Thread: TM question

I have an old 14 ft phantom tri hull boat 40hp evinrude that was my dads. It has a foot controlled trolling motor on it. The varible speed doesn't work and the foot pedal itself is broke in the center. Its useable to a certain degree.

Now here is the question can I go and buy a transom mount hand control and take the old one off the boat but use the mount from the old one instead of using the transom nount on the new one. To me I would think I could but have not really looked at it. Just been running thoughts in my head and plus I got 100 gift card from basspro. if it can work I need to run up there and grab it while its still onsale.
Also what do you all think about the one I want?

why would ya wont to use the old one if you got the room for the transom mount/// and you can put the new one on the old mount if it comes apart if not you will have to take the top off the new one and slid it in the old mount I have did this to 3 like that.....

I do want to switch to a hand controlled but didn't know if I could use the bow mount I have now instead of the transom mount that comes with the new one.

ya you can use it if you have a place to put it

I will take a look at the old one tomorrow. I want to use the bow mount cause I don't think I can rig up a place to use a transom mount. This is a cheaper way of fixing the problem. But like you said I could always take the head of the new one an run it up through the bow mount hole.

I guess you could if the shafts are the same diameter. One thing to consider: Is the shaft length going to be long enough on the new one??? With a hand control I think you definitely need more than a 30" shaft.

I was thinking on using a extension handle

okay just went out and looked at the current bow mount I have. I have flap that hold my shaft onto the mount. Its not a hole like the newer ones. Its like a hinge. SO I measure the shaft its 33 but would imagine its a 36 total. There has to be away to get 6". I could always tap onto the 30" shaft. I just can't see paying 150+ for TM for this boat.

Could I turn my pedal tm into a hand conrol? I was thinking I could buy one of those push button things(bigfoot) and mount then get a extension handle to turn it, and get a toggle switch for the 3 speeds

It doesn't have to be that long on the transom does it... but I have and old trolling motor its a johnson for the front of the boat if you wont it and it works fine it has the mount
