Default Fishing report for middle of September Kentucky Lake Big Sandy River

Hi folks. Welcome to Richard Williams Outdoors.

The water levels here on Kentucky Lake have continued to drop slowly, and are supposed to be 355.9 by the end of the weekend. The surface temperatures are still in the mid to the lower 80’s. But if we get the cooler weather that we are supposed to get, the water temperatures should come down quite a bit.
The crappie fishing this week has actually been pretty good. Most of the folks I have talked with are catching good numbers of crappie fishing close to structure in 8 to 11 feet of water. And again this week, minnows have been the better bait. However, if we get the cooler weather we are supposed to get, and if the water temperatures cool off like they should, the fish should start going back to hitting jigs again. I’m not sure why, but when the water temperatures are above the 80 degree mark, the fish prefer straight minnows. But when the water cools below the 80’s, most of the time they would rather hit the jigs.
Most of the bass and catfish anglers that I have talked with have told me that their fish catching has gone way down this week.
Don’t forget, Crappieusa is having a qualifying tournament this month on the 21st. Then they will have their National Championship next month, October 23rd thru the 26th. The weigh in sites for both tournaments will be at the Paris Landing Marina boat launching area. There will be a seminar the evening of September 20th. at Buchanan Resort. Registration for that tournament starts at 5:00pm and the seminar starts at 7:00pm.
They will also have a kids fishing rodeo on that Saturday morning. It is free to all kids 12 and under. There will be prizes for every kid that signs up plus their names will be put into a drawing for one of several scholarships to be given away at the Classic next month. Sign up starts at 8:00 am and they are allowed to fish from 9:00am until 11:00am. For more info about these tournaments, you can go to their web site at www.crappieusa.com
