Glad somebodys gettin to go. Might take off tomm. weather permitting.
Had the opportunity to fish with a friend of mine for a few hours on the Chick for Bluegills and Shellcrackers. We found the fish near the bull rushes and tight to them. You had to put your bait right up against the rushes or sometimes into them slightly to get a bite. If you watch the tops of the rushes carefully, you can see the rushes shake when the Shellcrackers rub them. If you find a Heron sitting in the rushes, fish those rushes. The heron is there to eat the bedding fish. We used a 1" piece of nightcrawler under a float at 12" only with a very small split shot. We never got any giants ( 10" max ) but we caught over 125 and kept 40 good ones. This was a mixed bag of Bluegills and Shellies with the majority being Shellies. These Shellies were heavy with roe and will spawn out in the next 3-4 days. The Gills were heavy with roe as well but they were there as opportunist to get a meal of eggs. Sorry, no pictures.

We fished for gills yesterday on Chick too. My first time hunting them over here. We were picking them up off the bottom in about 7' of water. Decent size ones but no where near the numbers you guys had. We fished Harrison Bay a little while and it was slow, then boated over to Dallas Bay and it was a little more action.
Where were you finding these rushes? Near Hiwassee area? Thanks for the details on how you were catching them. I'll look for them next time out.
I was going to go this morning and am kicking myself for not getting up & heading out before the rain moves in. We took a beating yesterday from the boat traffic fishing some rock walls in Dallas Bay. I may start heading north up the river some away from Chattanooga. They had another bass tournament yesterday at Chester Frost and it was as busy over there as I have ever seen it.
Try looking in the backends of the creeks, pockets, and also along the banks in the shallow flats. Our water depth was 3' max and averaged 2'. Most of the rushes were in 1' of water or less. Shallow areas closer to the main river are better as the migration route of the crackers is shorter and thus easier and quicker. We actually fished the Washington Ferry area although the Hiwassee has great cover and cracker fishing. Good Luck.
Thanks for the detailed response, it's much appreciated. I dont know if I could fish in a foot of water with my boat, but sure 2' wouldn't be a problem.
How bad is the boat traffic up that way? Down here where I'm at it is absolutely brutal on the weekends. We were rocked so much yesterday my back was sore when I got home.
Good catch and lots of fun, plus good eating.
great job there tnhooker, i knew you'd find them sooner or later
That's a fun day and a great report. Thanks for the nice update![]()
