Been lurking here long enough so decided to join in with you guys! Sadly, I don`t have lots of fishing time and I don`t fish at all in inclement weather but this time of year is irresistable. And I`d rather catch crappie than any other fish out there.
So, I`ve got a question for you guys. Tomorrow I`m looking to take my three boys hunting for some slabs. We`re in the upstate about 30 minutes to Hartwell.....45 minutes to Keowee.....and about 20-30 minutes from Lake Robinson. Don`t have a boat so it`s on the bank or dock for us. Anyone know how they`re hitting @ Lake Robinson? I think I`d rather go there as since it`s closest. Anywhere I take the kids needs to be level as my kids can be clumsy and I don`t want to have fish one of THEM out!
But, if someone can tell me a good spot on Hartwell that we would have a good chance at that`s fine. Just want to get them onto some fish as their attention span is a bit short. Also, I was thinking of using minnows and bobbers for them but I may try some jigs to see how that works. Are they still hitting light or will they yank a bobber under now?? How deep should we fish? Any and all suggestions are welcome! Thank you guys for allowing me to join the community!![]()
Welcome ABoard Spreadhead. cant help you on that area of the state but there are plenty of guy's on here that can. just hang tight and somebody will help you. Good Luck wherever you end up.
OLD AGE AIN'T FOR SISSY'S. !!! !
Thanks for the welcome! I would assume most folks are holding a rod about now rather than sitting at the puter. I`ll check in throughout the day. Have to go get my license in a bit and get the wifes rod all set. I bought her one and she hasn`t got to use it yet. It`s a hot pink rod that has led lights on the reel. When you reel it fast the gyrating motion causes the lights to come on and it looks pretty cool in the dark! Oh....son got a new rod for Christmas too.......have to string that one. These are medium sized rods....think 8lb test will do?
Lake Rabon comes to mind as well. Not too far a drive to Hickory Tavern area. Think I saw someone here talking about bank fishing down there too and someone said there was a dock/pier there. Just need an easily accesssible spot where they`re bitin`!
Welcome aboard Spreadhead. Lake Rabon would be the lake to fish, it has a dock for fishing also.Good crappie and bream fishing and you can fish from the bank too. From Rabon if you go on hwy 252 back toward Ware Shoals you will come to the Reedy River. You will see a dam on your right. Take road to the right before the bridge and go about a 1/4 mile and you will see a lake on your left. There is a pull off (dirt) that you can park at and fish. That lake is Boyd's Mill. It is a small lake but has some nice fishing. I have caught bream, crappie and catfish there. Good luck on your fishing.

Welcome to the board Spreadhead. I wish I was out there fishing instead of sitting at the computer, but I'm working all day so that's a bummer.
I don't do much crappie fishing from the bank but there are quite a few places to access Hartwell. I would suggest looking for a bridge since the sun will be out tomorrow to increase your chances. You could also hit up any landings or parks. However, Hartwell may be fairly muddy right now due to this weeks precipitation. I've never fished Robinson so I can't help you there but if it isn't muddy that may be your best chance.
*If you are looking to get the kids hooked on fishing here something that may help you. Go to SC DNR's website and there is a link called WEEKLY STOCKING REPORT. This report will refresh every week and it tells what rivers and lakes they stocked with trout. If I'm not mistaken you probably live towards Greenville, right? You should be close to Pleasant Ridge State Park which has a nice pond. Keep an eye out and when they stock it get the kids out there. This pond has trout and bass that I know of. You can use spoons, minnows, worms, powerbait, meal worms, etc. to catch the trout. The trick is to be there in the morning or evening. If you don't have any luck, Table Rock State Park has a lake that is stocked as well and is a short drive up Hwy 11. I've noticed that the two main things people us on these two small lakes are casting spoons and powerbait. I would suggest trying something that the fish don't see everyday like minnows or meal worms.
Stump just led you in the right direction. That man knows his crappie fishing!
Somehow that`s just what I was thinking about cleon! I said to self...."Self, you want to listen to Stumphunter.:D
Think that`s what we`ll do. I hear about Hartwell and I know the bridges would be the best bet there but it`s kind of noisy under most of them. Rabon would be a nice calm place and hopefully not too crowded....but I`m sure I`m not the only one ready to fish!
Thanks for that stocking info Cleon. You are correct. We`re in G`ville. Last time we were at Paris Mtn, it seemed the 2 guys I saw fishing were using worms for bream. For kids, I guess catching fish is catching fish but I love the fight of crappie and they are the best tasting freshwater fish in my opinion! Of course these days you gotta watch where you`re eating fish from with the water quality problems. That would be great to get them on some trout too! That brings back memories of my grandad and uncle taking me to stocked trout ponds when I was a kid. It was great to reel in a rainbow every 5 minutes on a kernel of corn. I can remember the look on grandad`s face when the guy told him the price per lb and I`m holding half a dozen bigguns!
I`ll have the camera tomorrow so I`ll try and share what pics I can. For now I`m headed to get some minnows.:D
Welcome aboard. Stumpy can get you catching fish.
