Last year instead of buying minnows, I started netting up the ones that are always swimming around the ramp I use. They look about like the store bought ones, except they have a flatter head and mouth. Sizes vary from small to medium. Anyone ever use these, or know any reason not to use them?
I dont see a thing wrong with it as long as they'll live in a minnow bucket and they catch fish. Just depends if you want to go to the trouble of chancing catching your own or just bringing 'em with ya I guess.
When I lived near lake lanier, lots of the guys down there netted those type minnows and used em to catch spotted bass. The guys from southern outdoors on FSN did a show about using them with Capt. Mack the striper guide. It was pretty informative, you might check their webpage and see if the link is still there. I think they called em spotted tail minnows. We would throw cracker crumbs on the ramp and then cast the net over them, but it sounds like you've got a plentiful supply at the ramp your using.
If they work then use them. Save a buck minnows......![]()
