Catching them big 'uns are a blast but arent you guys worried that your crappie arent raising and the perch are eating up all the small fry?!?I've been wondering that about Wylie for awhile looking at all the pics of the fish (all slabs) yall have been catching over there and reading about the white perch problem obviously yall have. Just hope that aint the case.
i read in the sc sportsman they do a nettin survey on wylie every year. they use the results of this survey to forecast the crappie ppulations for the next year. a lot of small fish indicates a healthy survival rate and a good bite for the next year. they said in this report that there was no fish caught that come from the 2005 hatch which indicated there was no survivors for that year. if im not mistaken, they seemed to think the problem may be coming from the abundance of white perch, eating the eggs and fry. weve been noticing and posting for the past couple years that theres not many small crappie being caught anymore. up to 3-4 years ago it was no problem catching a limit for everyone on the boat on a night stalk. we dint even know what a wp was. we also caught white bass occasionally. the last white bass i saw was the one pete caught at wateree when fishing outta my boat, and that was 3 or 4 years ago. now if we have 3 or 4 people on the boat, well be lucky to catch a limit of crappie for one or two. i aint no educated man by a long shot, but my common sense tells me that when we started catching wp the crappie bite started tapering off. if you aint catching any little crappie mixed in with your slabs, you will probably see even a bigger decrease in the numbers of crappie in the following years till it gets to the point seeing a crappie will be as common as seeing a white bass. sc need to follow nc's example and remove the limits on em.
listen with your eyes---its the only way to beleive what you hear...
Realeased all of the fish we caught......Maybe we'll catch em again in the near future...
