    Default The Hill

If you were going to fish the SC little river section of the Hill, where would you start this time of year? Im planning to go saturday, and put in at the 378 bridge near the state park. Looking at going up the creek to about Buffalo creek park to start. Should i go on up towards Long Cane? Or would you stay down closer to mouth near where the ramp is? Not often i try to longline for crappie this time of year.

I don't fish that part of the lake so I can't help you on the location that is best for crappie, but if you are fishing on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend you may have to be up stream a bit to get away from the pleasure boats and jet skis. I definitely would not venture down the river any from there.

Try Long Cane fresh cut pines in 10 to 12 ft water.

Get there early! Go past the "S" turn in the back of Lone Cane and try the end of the creek first. That water is @ 18' deep if I remember correctly and you can troll up to/and around the island. If not there move back past the "S" turn and start trolling towards the dirt ramp which is in the mouth of Lone Cane Cr. If catching....troll both sides. If nothing yet then troll towards the bridge and by that time if youre not catching I think it'll be time to call it a day on such a busy weekend.
BTW, keep your graph on and keep your eyes on it to see what it tells ya. IF necessary adjust to get your jigs down to where youre marking fish. Most of the time though...the aggressive fish will still be caught much shallower than where youre marking 'em at.
Good luck...and let us know how you do.

    Good info from previous posters.
Crappie are where you find them on sonar feeding on bait balls or brush or bridge columns right now.
l was on the hill yesterday but not little river SC but little river Georgia side and caught plenty of crappie spider rigging double minnow rig in 12 to 15 fow.
    Surface temp 82 and clear.
These fish could have been caught 'LL also but l concentrated on the bait ball feeding fish in one spot.
Yesterday evening they must have opened up Russell dam as the water was coming in so fast the creek l was in started running like a river.
    That's when the bite stopped.

It's not the numbers or the size, it's the time spent on the water!

They are really letting a lot of water out of Thurmond Dam right now. There is probably a lot more current than normal in the lake and tributaries. I heading up there today but I expect to see conditions pretty dirty in some of the creeks and rivers. The main lake could still be somewhat clear due to the water released from Russell.

You fish yesterday at all? Or did you just drive over and check out the lake?

If you go you might have to fish down towards the mouth of LC and towards the bridge instead of up towards where the river dumps in. Seems the lake is turning over in shallower areas now driving the fish downlake.

I went this morning. Started at the bridge just below LC. Caught a nice slab in the first minute of trolling. Then never had another bite. Water color looked very good to me. 12-24” visibility of chartreuse jig. Talked to some guys that were catching them at the bridge on minnows. Saw them catch several as I trolled. Worked all the way up to the dirt ramp. Lots of gar around. Plenty of shad near surface early. They just didn’t bite jigs for me today. Heading to Rabon tomorrow. But I’ll probably just bass fish. First time going there.
