    Default VHF Radio

Guys/Gals, my project pontoon came with an 8' C.B. antenna, Does anyone know if the same antenna can be used with a VHF? Sorta hate to buy another one if this one will work. It is an 8' fiberglass shakespear and the connector on the coax is the same size/type a VHF would use. Would appreciate any help. Carl

short answer...NO. The frequencies are different and require different length antennas (electrically different not physically different). You could take the antenna to a radio guru and get him (or her) to reconfigure it but it would be just as easy to get a new antenna. Also if it was in the weather for any length of time it would probably be corroded and may have problems. Don't risk destroying a radio on an unknown antenna. In my opinion...anyway

Mark is right. Different impedence. It would probably receive ok but the first time you tried to transmit it wouldn't load up properly and burn up your xmitter.

carl, are you sure its a cb antennae. white, 8 ft fiberglass shakespeare sounds to me like its a vhf. it might be the previous owner was using it on the wrong setup if he had it hooked to a cb. take it to radio shack and see what they say. them 8 footers are about 30 bucks. the mounts (SS) run about the same. i put a 4 footer on my boat, and they are expensive. about a hundred bucks. dont know why the shorter ones are so much more expensive.

I have the 8 foot Shakesphere on my boat. Most of the guys that I used to chat with while trolling now use nextel so the Marine Radio doesnt get used near as much . Also Crappie USA banned the use of Marine Radios & Phones because of a few whiners accuseing people that had the radios of cheating , and the thing that made me so mad was the one that accused guys of cheating had a radio too !!We use to talk on the radios on pratice day & also on tournament day It was a hoot to talk trash with your buddies , the thing is , most of everything that was said was a lie anyway !! I still have my Radio & love to talk & listen while fishing . I stay on 72

Thanks for the replies people. Rango, I am not sure if it is a C.B. or VHF. I just assume it is although I didn't get the radio with the boat. That is a great idea, I'll run it by a Radio Shack and see if I can find out one way or the other.

I have this unit on my boat and it works great on inland waters. Less than $50. Easy to mount.
