Need Some Advice
I have a very unique company tournament this weekend on Greenwood and I have only been on Greenwood twice and really do not know the lake. So any advice on locations, techniques, ect. would be greatly appreciated. I will be putting in around the 221 area.
The prizes will be for total weight of bass (6 fish)and total weight of crappie (10 fish). There will also be a prize for biggest bass, biggest crappie, and biggest catfish.
This is what makes it unique! I can use live or artificial bait. I can troll. Basically, the only rules are no fishing withing 50 ft of another angler, poll and line fishing only, and weigh in at 12:00 noon.
Also, I do not have to pick one species to fish for. I can weigh in bass, crappie, and/or catfish!

FishnLine I can try to help you with the green carp. I always stay in the Irvins area fishing CB's, poppers, and JNP's. I've done really good with DT6 in firetiger CB's, Skitter Pops in firetiger poppers, and L & M greenpumpkin or tequila with Zoom chunks JNP 3/8 oz. Big worms like Monster in black/red flakes have done the trick for me before also. Caught a 9+ # green carp once during practice off a TR Monster black/red flake at Irvins. Another great place to try is Skippers I use the same tatics and have done really good. You can't go wrong with these 2 places. Hope this helps with the green carp. For crappie try to find some brush and just drop minnows straight down. In Skippers right across from the landing in about 23+ft. of water in the channel their is a ton of brush mixed with rocks. We always catch some huge crappie and green carp their. Usualy drop medium minnows 15 - 20 ft. down only so they don't get stuck. Sorry I can't help you with the thugs on Greenwood. It's not a gaurantee you'll do any good in these places but it's worked for me many times in the past. Good luck and let us know the report afterwards.

not muck help
I wish I could help you fishin line, but I haven't been in a couple of weeks. I fish for crappie every time I get to fish on Greenwood. I am planning to go Sat. morning. I was planning on looking around the area near Skipper's and also in some deeper water near the dam. I am guessing that the bigger one's are still deeper. I would look for brush in 20-25ft of water like 33788 suggested. I have also heard of people catching them trolling in shallower water 7-10 ft. That is about all I can offer to you since I havne't been in so long. Good Luck

Thanks for the advice. Any advice right now is more than I had.

If I am not mistaken, Skippers is straight across from the state park, but please correct me if I am wrong. Where is the Irvins area? I have a lake map, but it doesn't list these areas.

If memory serves me correct Irvins is pas 221 going towards the dam. Mybe 3rd or 2nd cove to the right. You're correct about Skipper. It's across from the State Park. Their will be an island with a sign if it still exists that says Skipper with an arrow. Across from Skippers landing their will be a huge dock probably the biggest and nicest one in Skipper. Loaded with brush but you can't see them. Move out to 23+ ft. water still close to that dock and you'll be in the area I said previously.

Thanks alot for sharing the info. I went today and won three out of the five catagories. If you ever head to Russell, let me know. I don't know alot of great spots, but if I have any up to date information I'll be glad to share it with you.

Hey Fishnline, you been crappie fishing Russell lately? Not wanting any of your spots, just looking for some current fish-bite info about the lake.

Congratz. Fishnline on the wins. What categories did you win, what did you catch them on, and what areas did you fish. I was hoping to make it out to Greenwood sometime soon, go chase some green carp and crappie. Haven't been out to Greenwood since spring so some info. is better than none right now. I've only been to Russell maybe 2 times chasing green carp. Next time I'll be sure to shoot you a PM.

gabowman,
I haven't been fishing much at all lately, due to work. I went out to get on the water one day and cast some jigs around bridges and brush with no luck, but I didn't fish hard. I was just needing to get on the water. You know how that is!
This time of year is hard for me. I am torn between fishing and hunting. I hunt around Russell, so some days I do both!
33788,
I just really started crappie fishing the past two years and I have not got used to the fall pattern, so I didn't win the crappie part. I figured during a tournament would not be a good time to try to learn how to catch crappie during the fall. I won first place in bass, biggest bass, and biggest catfish. I'm still not sure where the Irvins area is, but I may have been in the area from your directions. I left 221 and went toward the dam, past the train trussel and there are two big coves past there on the right. I started on the point between them and fished into the first cove about 1/2 to 2/3's to the back of the cove and then fished the same area again. I hooked one that would have went atleast three pounds on a DT6 firetirger that got off right at the boat when I was trying to get it in. I caught my biggest on a white spinner bait with three blades. (2.5 lbs) I caught the rest on a Zoom green pumpkin dead ringer. I threw a monster black with red flake with no success. Every fish I caught was on a retaining wall. I couldn't buy a bite around a dock. The wind was blowing really hard into the cove and most fish were around the corners waiting on baitfish to be washed around ( i guess). If I think of anything else, I will let you know.
