    Thumbs up Hartwell 4/5/10

Got on the lake this morning at 7:30, got my rods out for longlining and couldn't find any fish. Looked in all depths without even seeing a fish on my depth finder until 10:00. FOUND EM!!!!
Had to reach deep in my bag today but that's fishing. Had to change everything over to one 1/32 jig and the only color they would touch was a black and blue head/ chart tail. All fish were in 5 to 9' of water and the jig had to be running at 3 to 4' deep. The wind picked up so it was hard to say what speed but .09 is close.
Caught 34 crappie with the two biggest 2 pound 1oz & 1 pound 15oz. 4 catfish, 2 shell-crackers, 1 bass and 5 hybrids. All the fish were in a 200 yard span.Didn't keep but 10 crappie but the eggs are ready for spawn and caught some dark black males, got a pic of one of em.
The water was 65 degrees at start and got up to 72 at 2pm when I stopped for the day.
Summer is here with no spring. Great day on Hartwell with only one boat close to me all day. Guy was pulling kids on a tube and most not have know the water got to 3' deep in the cove He turned around and never would even look at me. More boat than he needs!!!
The crappie are ready on Hartwell if you can find em!

Great report Stump. Everything we caught on Hartwell was in 6' of water or less. Thanks for the report and congrats on the catch.

Another nice catch Ronnie. Takes some looking sometimes to find 'em but that's half the fun to me. That wind was tough today. I'm already looking forwards to the cooler temps the latter part of this week too. That sun might make me a nightstalker again.:p Congrats again. Nice pics.

I wish my daughter had made a better pic, those crappie are nice and I didn't look at the pics before the crappie were filleted. There were a couple guys fishing on the bank that couldn't believe the cove they were fishing in had crappie that big.
The crappie are holding on a brush line. It's were some brush grew when the water dropped so low.
I'm going back Wed to spider rig the place. I know how deep they are and where they are at, if they stay there''. Going to take a few minnows too and see if they want some meat.
Something was working the bank but I'm not sure it is crappies. The shell-crackers are already peeing so they are bedding too.
The guys that were fishing on the bank were catfishing and catching some big ones using liver.

good job finding them thats the hardest part. Once you find em generally you can find a color that works.

That sounds like a good day on the 'well to me! We were using almost the same color scheme on Sunday, just bigger jigs. Sounds like its time to downsize! Hope you do well tomorrow. As for the uneducated pleasure boater, keep an eye out Anderson Co. Schools are out this week for spring break so there will be more out and about.

I started off pulling 1/16 or two 1/32. Caught one when the wind pushed the boat faster. Tried to speed up but the jigs were running on top of the water. This was the first time using just one 1/32 LL so I had to get use to the lighter weight. Pulling into the wind I could control the speed but with the wind to my back there were no catching em. The hybrids were fun too but they can take out all your rods with one run!!! The biggest hybrid was maybe three pound.

Stump , drag about a six foot peice of 3/8" chain on bottom behind your boat , hooked to a rope . that will stabilize your speed pretty good when it is windy . It will also help your boat with the cross winds . The down side is it pulls your trolling batteries down faster. We caught fish 2 weeks ago shallow at the Hill , pulling single 48 oz. jigs . Congrats on your catch , and good job finding them .
Good freinds ,Good food ,and Good fish , what else can you ask for ?
